Upon the topographic maps of the Geological Survey were drawn the outlines of cleared land and the several classes of forest land as they were passed. At the same time ocular estimates of the average stand and the proportion of the species composing it were made, checked occasionally by actual measurements on small representative areas. After the outlines of the several classes of land were drawn the areas were computed from the map, and the yield obtained by multiplying the number of acres of each class by the average stand. The yield is stated in feet B. M. of log timber, and cords of small wood (which includes all wood not classed as log timber). The estimates of log timber were based upon the closest cutting in practice in the United States, and include a great deal of material that is not now salable on the stump, because of the difficulty of transportation. The fluorspar, lead, and zinc deposits that were the subject of the investigations reported in this paper are situated hi Livings ton, Crittenden, and Caldwell, and adjacent portions of Christian, Trigg, and Lyon counties, in western Kentucky, and in the counties immediately across the Ohio River, in the extreme southern portion of Illinois. This area, constituting what may be aptly termed the Kentucky-Illinois fluorite district, contains also lead, zinc, and other minerals in subordinate quantities and values. It is usually considered a minor division of the lead and zinc districts of the Mississippi Valley, but is in some ways rather sharply distinguished from the other districts of the valley. It differs from the other districts chiefly in the following respects: (1) In the presence of basic igneous dikes; (2) in the abundance of fluorite and its almost constant association with the lead and zinc ores; and (3) in the mode of occurrence of the ores, which are found principally in true fissure .veins that have resulted from fracturing and subsequent faulting. The report is accompanied by a reconnaissance map by Mr. D. C. Witherspoon, topographer, under whose directions the field operations were carried out.</p><p>Surveys were begun in Seward Peninsula in 1899, soon after the discovery of the rich placers of Nome, and, in view of the great economic importance of the field, have been extended as rapidly as the appropriations permitted. It was early recognized that here, as elsewhere in Alaska, it would be better to obtain general topographic and geologic results, to be immediately available to the mining public, than to attempt exhaustive surveys and studies of small areas. This has been the guiding policy in formulating and executing the plans. As a result, there have been issued a number of publications (including reconnaissance maps) which, though only of a preliminary character, have been, because of their timeliness, of much value to the mining public.</p><p>With the appearance of the following report this first epoch in the surveys will have closed, for there will be available complete reconnaissance reports and maps of the entire Seward Peninsula. These general reports and maps should be followed by more detailed surveys; these have been begun, and it is purposed to carry them forward as rapidly as circumstances will permit.
