Description:
Abstract:
This report provides a geologic map of the Peach Orchard Flat 7.5-minute
quadrangle, located along the eastern flank of the Washakie Basin, Wyo.
Geologic formations and individual coal beds were mapped at a scale of
1:24,000; surface stratigraphic sections were measured and described;
and well logs were examined to determine coal correlations and
thicknesses in the subsurface. In addition, four lithostratigraphic
units were named: the Red Rim Member of the Upper Cretaceous Lance
Formation, and the China Butte, Blue Gap, and Overland Members of the
Paleocene Fort Union Formation.
Purpose:
The data set was collected as part of a larger effort to acquire data on
Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary coal-bearing rocks in the eastern Washakie
Basin and southeastern Great Divide Basin. The report also provides
justification and rationale for naming new members in the Upper
Cretaceous Lance Formation and Paleocene Fort Union Formation. Regions
in the eastern Washakie Basin and southeastern Great Divide Basin have
potential for coal development and were considered previously for coal
leasing by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
In version 1.1 of this map, a correction is made regarding the location of
the Overland Member of the Fort Union Formation at its type locality. The
correct location of the top of the measured section is 600 ft from the
west line and 1,150 ft from the south line of sec. 34, T. 17 N., R. 92 W.,
Doty Mountain 7.5-minute quadrangle.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The database consists of newly generated data that were compiled on a
scale-stable greenline of the Peach Orchard Flats quadrangle and then
digitized in ARC/INFO. This map was thoroughly reviewed for conformity
with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic
nomenclature.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Map elements were visually checked by the authors, cartographers, and editor
for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon attributes, and
other errors. The coverages were cleaned in ARC/INFO to ensure logical
consistency that is topologically clean. The map was reviewed by other
geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general
conformity to USGS mapping standards.
Completeness_Report:
This dataset is complete and includes the spatial coverages pertaining to
the geologic map.

Users of this digital geologic map should respect the intentions of the
original mappers and the map compilers, and the limitations of the map.
The geology data set of the Peach Orchard Flats quadrangle is intended
to be used at a scale of 1:24,000. It is not intended to be used at a
more detailed scale.

Process_Description:
Mapping was based on field observations, analysis of black and white
aerial photographs (scale 1:28,000, flown in 1975), topography, and
drill-hole data. The linework was transferred from aerial photographs
to base maps using a PG-2 stereo-plotter, and digitized manually, and
the data were then digitally registered to a digital version of the base
map in ArcInfo. Geologic cross sections show the subsurface thickness
of coal beds in the units of interest. The cross sections were
constructed using stratigraphic sections measured in the field and from
borehole electrical logs.
