Abstract:
This digital map database, compiled from previously published and unpublished data, and new mapping by the authors, represents the general distribution of bedrock and surficial deposits of the Ridgefield 7.5-minute quadrangle. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. The scale of the source maps limits the spatial resolution (scale) of the database to 1:24,000 or smaller.
Purpose:
This database and accompanying plot files depict the distribution of geologic materials and structures at a regional (1:24,000) scale. The report is intended to provide geologic information for the regional study of materials properties, earthquake shaking, landslide potential, mineral hazards, seismic velocity, and earthquake faults. In addition, the report contains new information and interpretations about the regional geologic history and framework. However, the regional scale of this report does not provide sufficient detail for site development purposes.
Supplemental_Information:
DIGITAL COMPILATION-Several different feature classes were generated within a geodatabase during the construction of the Ridgefield quadrangle geologic map. The topographic base map remains as a digital raster graphic (DRG) and is overlain on the geology feature class in ArcMap at a 60% transparency level. Some custom menus were used to project, transform, edit, tag, and build points in the map. A digital layout or map collar was made with Adobe Illustrator. The map was exported from the layout view in ArcMap as an Adobe Illustrator file and added to a single Adobe Illustrator file that also contained the description of map units, correlation of map units, cross sections, and an index map. Differences between the maps as they appear in the final map sheet and as they appear in the either the .mxd or .pmf files represent changes made in the Adobe Illustrator file to the symbology only and do not reflect any changes in the actual source data. The map is in UTM projection, zone 10, meters, and 1:24,000 scale. The explanatory pamphlet was saved to PDF from Microsoft Word.

BASE MAP-The base map for the digital compilation is a Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1:24,000-scale topographic map of the Ridgefield 7.5' quadrangle (1990), which has a 10-foot contour interval. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the Universal Transverse Mercator projection. The horizontal positional accuracy and datum of the DRG matches the accuracy and datum of the source map. The base map layer is a digital image, but no information other than location is attached to the lines. The base map is provided for reference only.

SPATIAL RESOLUTION-Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited at a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.

Cataclysmic-flood deposits, fine-grained facies (Pleistocene)-Unconsolidated clay, silt, and fine to medium sand; grain size decreases gradually to north. Throughout quadrangle mantle low-relief surfaces below about 300 ft (90 m) elevation but above Holocene floodplains. Rare fresh exposures reveal rhythmite beds several centimeters thick, each bed probably the product of a separate flood (Waitt, 1980, 1985, 1994; Clague and others, 2003), but in most exposures deposit is oxidized light brown, and bedding is inconspicuous. Composed largely of quartz, feldspar, and conspicuous muscovite, which indicate deposition by Columbia River rather than by local streams. Interpreted as slack-water deposits of large floods initiated by failure of ice dam at Glacial Lake Missoula in western Montana during the late Pleistocene (Bretz, 1925, 1959; Bretz and others, 1956; Waitt, 1980, 1985, 1994, 1996; Baker and Bunker, 1985; Atwater, 1986; O'Connor and Baker, 1992; Benito and O'Connor, 2003). Floodwaters, hydraulically dammed by relatively narrow constriction of Columbia River valley north of quadrangle, ponded in Portland Basin, and deposited suspended sediment load (Trimble, 1963). Water-well drillers' logs indicate unit is typically about 30 to 35 m thick south of East Fork Lewis River; thin unmapped deposits of similar character locally mantle area north of East Fork Lewis River to elevations as high as 350 ft (120 m). Radiocarbon ages and tephrochronologic data from outside the map area indicate floods occurred between about 17,000 and 13,000 14C years B.P. (Waitt, 1994; Clague and others, 2003)

Well exposed in gravel pits near Ridgefield; water-well data and scattered outcrops demonstrate that unit forms continuous stratum 20-40 m thick beneath cataclysmic flood deposits (Qfs) throughout area south of East Fork Lewis River; somewhat thicker (to 60 m) beneath hills north of Packard Creek; laps out against Troutdale Formation and Paleogene bedrock north of East Fork. Well-rounded clasts to 25 cm diameter of Columbia River Basalt Group dominate unit but quartzite pebbles and scattered larger clasts of Cascadian volcanic rocks locally present, including subangular blocks up to 80 cm across of andesite in Allen Canyon. Some openwork gravel, but most gravel in unit possesses sandy matrix that is compositionally similar to interbedded sand lenses. Proportion of subrounded to subangular Cascadian volcanic rocks increases northeast, where gravel beds are generally thinner and more poorly sorted. Much of unit lithologically similar to Troutdale Formation, but differs in its thinner weathering profile, more pronounced clast imbrication (invariably indicating northward transport), and presence of widely scattered but conspicuous clasts of olivine basalt and local sandy interbeds of yellow-brown, fluvially reworked basaltic hyaloclastite. Age poorly known; probably predominantly Pliocene but upper part may include lower Pleistocene strata. Includes deposits assigned to the Troutdale Formation by Mundorff (1964); contiguous with deposits in adjacent Battle Ground quadrangle mapped as alluvial-fan member of Troutdale Formation by Howard (2002). Presence of olivine-basalt clasts suggests correlation with informal upper member of Troutdale Formation in the Columbia Gorge as defined by Tolan and Beeson (1984), inferred to be of Pliocene age

Underlies upper part of broad, south- to southwest-sloping surface north of East Fork Lewis River, Mundorff's (1964) Troutdale bench. Clast population dominated by well-rounded cobbles of the Columbia River Basalt Group; typically includes some light-colored granitic and quartzofeldspathic metamorphic rocks, conspicuous white to light-gray, Fe-oxide stained quartzite, and scarce cobbles of pyroxene or hornblende andesite. Composition of sandstone interbeds and matrix of conglomerate ranges from basaltic grit to micaceous arkose compositionally similar to beds of Sandy River Mudstone, indicating source areas east of the Cascade Range and deposition by ancestral Columbia River. In most places, upper several meters is thoroughly weathered to reddish-brown clayey soil; in such areas, presence of scattered, Fe-stained, brown to yellow quartzite pebbles on surface is the only indicator of protolith. Logs of water wells indicate unit is as much as 70 m thick and that weathering extends to depths exceeding 30 m (Mundorff, 1964; Swanson and others, 1993). Equivalent to upper member of Troutdale Formation of Mundorff (1964) and to quartzite-clast member of Troutdale Formation of Howard (2002)

Sandy River Mudstone (Miocene)-Poorly indurated arkosic, tuffaceous, and carbonaceous sandstone, siltstone, claystone, and minor pebble conglomerate. Exposed beneath Troutdale Formation in creek valleys of northeast part of quadrangle, beneath unnamed conglomerate (QTc) in southwest bank of East Fork Lewis River and in valleys of small creeks to the west, and along railroad grade north of Ridgefield. Sedimentary structures in sandy horizons indicate a fluvial depositional environment; finer grained deposits probably represent overbank settings on broad floodplain. South of East Fork Lewis River, unit consists largely of friable quartzofeldspathic sand and silt, bluish gray where fresh but weathers rapidly to light brown to tan; commonly is limonite cemented; composed of subangular grains of quartz, feldspar, various rock fragments, muscovite and minor biotite, tourmaline, magnetite, hornblende. Considered correlative with Sandy River Mudstone of Trimble (1963); equivalent to lower member of Troutdale Formation of Mundorff (1964) and to fine-grained member of Troutdale Formation of Howard (2002)

Grande Ronde Basalt (Miocene)Light- to dark-gray flows of tholeiitic basaltic andesite; vesicular to microvesicular, aphyric to microphyric to very sparsely plagioclase-phyric; exhibit relatively low-TiO2 contents (table 1) characteristic of the Grande Ronde Formation of the Columbia River Basalt Group (Mangan and others, 1986; Beeson and others, 1989; Reidel and others, 1989). Found as erosional remnants banked against Paleogene bedrock along north bank of East Fork Lewis River between La Center and Jenny Creek and along railroad grade 2-3 km north of Ridgefield; overlain by Sandy River Mudstone, Troutdale Formation, and unnamed conglomerate (Tsr, Ttf, and QTc). Textures resemble those described by Long and Wood (1986) for basalt flows on the Columbia Plateau. Basalt erupted from vents in eastern part of Plateau and entered northwestern Oregon and southwestern Washington through a wide gap in the Cascade Range (Tolan and others, 1989; Wells and others, 1989). Reidel and others (1989) divided the Grande Ronde Basalt on the Columbia Plateau into several informal members on basis of lithologic, chemical and paleomagnetic properties; all exposures of Grande Ronde Basalt in this quadrangle are assigned to member of Sentinel Bluffs of Reidel and others, (1989), which is within the N2 magnetostratigraphic unit of Swanson and others (1979). Terminology is that of Reidel, 1998) Member of Sentinel BluffsBasalt characterized by relatively high MgO contents (about 4.4 to 4.8 wt percent) and normal magnetic polarity (J.T. Hagstrum, written commun., 2000, 2002). Eroded flow remnants at least 20 m thick and exhibit well-developed colonnade and entablature jointing. Commonly contains sparse plagioclase and rare olivine phenocrysts as large as 4 mm in an intersertal to intergranular groundmass of lathlike plagioclase, granular clinopyroxene, skeletal Fe-Ti oxide crystals, and scarce equant olivine grains in abundant dark glass. Chemical analyses (table 1) and paleomagnetic measurements (J.T. Hagstrum, written commun., 2000, 2002) indicate that the basalt near Jenny Creek and that north of Ridgefield belong to separate flows. 40Ar/39Ar age determinations by Long and Duncan (1983) from this unit on Columbia Plateau indicate age of 15.6±0.2 Ma
