Also included on the map are historical landslides that occurred prior to 1998. The data for the map are divided into four polygon coverages that include the outlines of: 1) debris flows that occurred in 1998; 2) debris flows that occurred prior to 1998; 3) slides that occurred in 1998; and 4) slides that occurred prior to 1998. The term "slides" designates generally slow-moving rotational and translational slides, earth flows, and complex slope movements. Debris flows are fast-moving flows of mud gravel, and organic material that commonly mobilize from slides (see Coe and others, 2003, for further explanation). These data are the polygons that outline the slides that occurred in 1998. The slides were mapped from 1:12,000 scale, color, stereo aerial photographs onto portions of four USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles using a Kern PG-2 photogrammetric plotter. The mapped slides were then digitized into an ArcInfo GIS. The scale of the final map and these data is 1:18,000. Purpose: The purpose of these data are to provide and inventory of debris flows that occurred during the winter season of 1997-98 in a 150-square kilometer area in the vicinity of Crow Creek in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, California. These data do not constitute a debris-flow hazard map of the area. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: The debris-flow source areas, travel paths, and deposits were mapped using 1:12,000-scale color aerial photographs and a Kern PG-2 photogrammetric plotter. The photographs were scaled and oriented to the topographic base map using prominent topographic and or cultural landmarks and plotted on the topographic base maps at a scale of 1:12,000. The mapped debris flows were digitized manually in ArcInfo. Process_Step: Process_Description: Metadata imported.
