Together with the accompanying geologic description pamphlet, it presents current knowledge of the geologic structure and stratigraphy of the area covered. The database identifies map units that are classified by age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the USGS. The scale of the source maps limits the spatial resolution (scale) of the database to 1:24,000 or smaller. Note: The extent of this database conforms to the boundaries of the four quadrangles listed above; however, the topographic base maps produced by the USGS for the Moccasin and Kaibab quadrangles extend slightly to the north of the 37-degree latitude line that should define the northern limit of these 7.5- minute quadrangles. Thus, if this database is overlain with a digital file of quadrangle boundaries there is a mismatch. Purpose: The geologic map of Pipe Spring National Monument and the Western Kaibab-Paiute Indian Reservation covers part of the Uinkaret Plateau of the Arizona Strip north of Grand Canyon National Park and west of Fredonia, Arizona. The map is a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey, National Park Service, and the Kaibab-Paiute Tribe. The map fills in one of the remaining areas where uniform quality geologic mapping is needed. The geologic information will be useful for geologic, biologic, and hydrologic resource studies. The accuracy inherent in map scale is also present in digital format. At a scale larger than 1:24,000, higher resolution data is not available and will not yield greater real detail. Where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Any hardcopies utilizing these datasets shall clearly indicate their source. If users modify the data in any way they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed. User specifically agrees not to misrepresent these datasets, nor to imply that changes they made were approved by the U.S. Geological Survey. The neatline was mathematically generated from latitude and longitude values. Completeness_Report: The geologic map and digital database of Pipe Spring National Monument and the Western Kaibab-Paiute Indian Reservation is designed to describe completely the surficial and bedrock geology at a 1:31,680 scale on the map and 1:24,000 scale for the database. Geologic information only mappable at a larger scale has been omitted. All geospatial database elements are attributed. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Well-located data are intended to have a positional accuracy within .5 mm at a 1:31,680 map scale, or 16 meters on the ground. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: This map was produced using 1:24,000-scale 1976 infrared and 2003 color aerial photographs followed by extensive field checking. Many of the Quaternary alluvial deposits that have similar lithology but different geomorphic characteristics were mapped almost entirely by photogeologic methods. Stratigraphic position and amount of erosional degradation were used to determine relative ages of alluvial deposits having similar lithologies. Each map unit and structure was investigated in detail in the field to ensure accuracy of description. Process_Step: Process_Description: Geologic features were identified on aerial photographs, then hand-drawn by inspection on 1:24,000-scale paper USGS topographic base maps. These base maps were scanned on an HP800 scanner/copier at 300 dpi and saved in TIFF format. The TIFF files were each georeferenced in ArcMap to the corresponding 1:24,000-scale USGS digital raster graphic (DRG). The geologic features were then heads-up digitized in Arcview 3.2 using the scanned base maps and the DRGs as a guide; digitizing scale was approximately 1:10,000. Geologic contacts, faults, and folds were digitized as line shapefiles; geologic units, collapse structures, and structural attitudes were digitized as point shapefiles. These shapefiles were converted to ARC/INFO coverages. The line coverage containing geologic contacts and faults was combined with the point coverage containing geologic unit designations to produce a polygon coverage that stores depositional contacts, rock units, and faults. All coverages and associated features and attribute tables were edited as needed to achieve an error-free database. Geospatial entities in ARC/INFO coverages have the following software-defined attributes: .pat contains AREA, PERIMETER, COVER#, and COVER-ID; .aat contains FNODE#, TNODE#, LPOLY#, RPOLY#, LENGTH, COVER#, and COVER-ID. User-defined attributes are described in detail below. (1) The coverage pispglg includes the following feature attribute tables: (a) a polygon feature attribute table (pispglg.pat) that describes the geospatial distribution of surficial units represented in the Postscript (.eps) and Portable Document Format (.pdf) plotfiles of the map. (b) an arc feature attribute table (pispglg.aat) that describes the contacts and linear features that bound rock-unit polygons. For display purposes, the pispglg coverage includes an annotation class which contains line types and arcmarker symbols derived from the coded items LTYPE and PTTYPE respectively. (2) The coverage pispfld includes an arc feature attribute table (pispfld.aat) that describes linear features (folds). For display purposes, the pispfld coverage includes an annotation class which contains line types and arcmarker symbols derived from the coded items LTYPE and PTTYPE respectively. Arrowheads indicating plunging folds are drawn based on values in the coded item PLUNGE. (3) The coverage pispatd includes the following: (a) a point feature attribute table (pispatd.pat) that describes the position of point data including fault offsets and strike and dip. Symbols are derived from the item PTTYPE, fault offset in feet is derived from item FLT_OFF, dip angle in degrees is from item DIP, and strike angle in degrees is in item STRIKE. (b) pispatd also contains annotation for dip values. (4) The coverage pispkar includes a point feature attribute table (pispkar.pat) that describes the position of collapse structure point data. Symbols are derived from coded item PTTYPE.
