Description:
Abstract:
This quadrangle, which lies almost exactly in the center of the Puget Lowland, displays the broad range of geologic environments typical of the region. The upland plain is fluted by the passage of the great continental ice sheet that last covered the area about 17,000 years ago. The plain is cut by channel deposits, both late-glacial and postglacial in age, and it is cleaved even more deeply by one of the major arms of Puget Sound, the Colvos Passage, which here separates the west coast of Vashon Island from the Kitsap Peninsula. Beneath the deposits of the last ice sheet is a complex sequence of older Quaternary-age sediments that extends about 400 meters below the modern ground. The older sediments typically are compact, having been weighted down by one or more episodes of glaciation subsequent to their deposition. Some also are cemented by iron and manganese oxides and hyrdroxides, a consequence of many tens or hundreds of thousands of years of weathering and groundwater movement.
Purpose:
General-purpose geologic map at 1:24,000 scale. Provides geologic information for the regional study of materials properties, earth history, water resources, earthquake shaking hazards, and mineral resources.
Supplemental_Information:
DIGITAL COMPILATION-Several different feature classes were generated within a geodatabase during the construction of the Olalla quadrangle geologic map. The topographic base map remains as a digital raster graphic (DRG) and is overlain on the geology Polygon feature class in ArcMap at a 40% transparency level. Some custom menus were used to project, transform, edit, tag, and build points in the map. A digital layout or map collar was made with Adobe Illustrator. The map was exported from the layout view in ArcMap as an Adobe Illustrator file and added to a single Adobe Illustrator file that also contained the description of map units, correlation of map units, cross sections, and an index map. Differences between the maps as they appear in the final map sheet and as they appear in either the .mxd or .pmf files represent changes made in the Adobe Illustrator file to the symbology only and do not reflect any changes in the actual source data. The map is in UTM projection, zone 10, meters, and 1:24,000 scale.

BASE MAP - The base map for the digital compilation is a Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1:24,000-scale topographic map of the Olalla 7.5' quadrangle (1994), which has a 20-foot contour interval. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the Universal Transverse Mercator projection. The horizontal position accuracy and datum of the DRG matches the accuracy and datum of the source map. The base map layer is a digital image, but no information other than location is attached to the lines. The base map is provided for reference only.

The hillshade for the digital compilation was created from a U.S. Geological Survey 10-meter Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the Olalla 7.5' quadrangle (1994). The DEM and resulting hillshade are georeferenced to the NAD 27 Universal Transverse Mercator projection. The vertical accuracy of DEM data depends on the source and resolution of the data samples, and is probably 7 meters, but may be as much as 15 meters. The hillshade was created with a sun aziumuth of 45 degrees, a sun height angle of 50 degrees, and vertical exaggeration of 2.

SPATIAL RESOLUTION-Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of the paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited at a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.

The accuracy with which earth materials are classified by this map is unquantified. Sophisticated readers will note that map units are chosen to minimize potential misclassification of the age of materials.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Rarely is the locational accuracy of features on geologic maps precisely defined and this map is no exception. The circa 10 meters spatial precision of the digitization process provides a lower bound on the error with which features are located by this map. Many geologists understand that well-located (continuous line) contacts and faults should be within a millimeter or so on the map from their current location. At 1:24,000 scale, the nominal scale of these data, one millimeter of locational error on the map corresponds to 24 meters on the ground. This may approximate the accuracy with which many features are located.
Lineage:
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Derek Booth plotted geologic contacts and registration tics on mylar film. This film was scanned at 400 dpi and vectorized automatically. The resulting files were then edited extensively on screen. Proof plots were inspected and revised by Booth; then the revisions were digitized. The intrinsic locational error (digitized lines relative to map base) of this process is potentially as small as 3 meters, though in practice it is commonly as large as 10 meters. These data were transferred to Ray Wells, Project Chief of the Pacific Northwest Urban Corridor Geologic Mapping Project at the USGS, and imported into an ArcGIS 8.3 geodatabase. The geodatabase was upgraded to ArcGIS 9.0 prior to publication.
