The geologic features mapped as part of this project include: geologic contacts and faults, bedrock and surficial geologic units, structural data, fold axes, karst features, mines, and volcanic features. The features were identified on black and white, 1:24,000-scale aerial photographs taken in 1974, then compiled on 1:24,000-scale paper USGS topographic base maps. The compilation maps were extensively field-checked, then scanned, georeferenced and digitized. The resultant feature classes preserve the 1:24,000-scale data (the scale of the source mapping) and also contain attributes that facilitate generalization to 1:100,000 (the scale used to produce the published geologic map and a scale that is more applicable for regional studies/analysis). Note: This metadata report provides an overview of the data content of this geodatabase. In addition, each feature class (except annotation feature classes) has a corresponding metadata report that should be referred to for additional Spatial Data Organization, Data Quality and Entity Attribute information. Version 1.1, March, 2014 - Minor edits were made to the geodatabase to correct geology and facilitate edgematch with adjacent USGS maps. - The database was upgraded from ArcGIS 9.3 to ArcGIS 10.2. - Changes made to the geodatabase are not reflected in the pamphlet or on map sheet PDFs. Purpose: This digital database was produced as part of a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Park Service to provide geologic information for regional resource management in the vicinity of Grand Canyon National Park. This map fills one of the remaining areas where uniform quality geologic mapping was needed. Together with the accompanying pamphlet, it provides current information on the geologic structure and stratigraphy of the area. The geologic information will be useful for resource management studies by federal, state, and private agencies. Supplemental_Information: The structure of this geodatabase and its associated feature classes, as well as the feature class naming conventions, loosely follows The National Park Service Geologic Resources Evaluation Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model (DRAFT, V. 1.2), which can be found at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.htm) Feature classes: geologic contacts and faults (vlglg_arc) geologic unit labels (vlglg_pt) geologic unit polygons, 1:24,000-scale (vlglg_poly_24k) geologic unit polygons, 1:100,000-scale (vlglg_poly_100k) structural data (vlatd) folds (vlfld) karst features (vlkar) mines (vlmin) cross-section lines (vlsec) volcanic line features (vlvlf) volcanic point features (vlvpf) 7.5' quadrangle boundaries (vlqds) Annotation feature classes: geologic unit annotation, 1:100,000 (vlglg_100kanno) geologic unit annotation, 1:24,000 (vlglg_24kanno) dip and fault offset values, 1:100,000 (vlatd_100kanno) dip and fault offset values, 1:24,000 (vlatd_24kanno) mine labels (vlminanno) cross section labels (vlsecanno) Relationship classes: vlatd_100kanno - links vlatd to vlatd_100kanno vlatd_24kanno - links vlatd to vlatd_24kanno vlglg_24kanno - links vlglg to vlglg_24kanno Related tables: List of 1:100,000-scale geologic map units (vllmu100k) List of 1:24,000-scale geologic map units (vllmu24k) Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Range_of_Dates/Times: Beginning_Date: 2001 Ending_Date: 2006 Currentness_Reference: ground condition Status: Progress: Complete Maintenance_and_Update_Frequency: As needed Spatial_Domain: Bounding_Coordinates: West_Bounding_Coordinate: -113.017821 East_Bounding_Coordinate: -111.993760 North_Bounding_Coordinate: 36.012507 South_Bounding_Coordinate: 35.487024 Keywords: Theme: Theme_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Theme_Keyword: geologic map Theme_Keyword: geology Theme_Keyword: geologic contacts Theme_Keyword: geologic faults Theme_Keyword: geologic units Theme_Keyword: fold axis Theme_Keyword: anticline Theme_Keyword: syncline Theme_Keyword: monocline Theme_Keyword: geologic structure data Theme_Keyword: attitudes Theme_Keyword: strikes and dips Theme_Keyword: joints Theme_Keyword: karst Theme_Keyword: sinkhole Theme_Keyword: collapse structure Theme_Keyword: mines Theme_Keyword: uranium Theme_Keyword: copper Theme_Keyword: geologic cross sections Theme_Keyword: volcano Theme_Keyword: basalt flow Theme_Keyword: volcanic vent Theme_Keyword: cinder cone Place: Place_Keyword_Thesaurus: none Place_Keyword: Valle Place_Keyword: Colorado Plateau Place_Keyword: Coconino County Place_Keyword: Grand Canyon National Park Place_Keyword: Arizona Place_Keyword: USA Access_Constraints: None Use_Constraints: Not for use at scales greater than 1:24,000. Native_Data_Set_Environment: ESRI ArcGIS 10.2, Personal Geodatabase Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Geologic features were identified, mapped, digitized, and attributed by the principle investigator (George Billingsley). The features were symbolized based on their attributes and plotted at 1:24,000-scale and compared visually with the original source maps. Logical_Consistency_Report: This database has been reviewed and is considered to be error-free. All features have attributes. Each line segment has a length and directionality that is appropriate for the geologic feature it depicts. No sliver polygons are present. Completeness_Report: This database is considered complete. All geologic features depicted on the source maps were digitized and attributed. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Most of the geologic features in this database are considered to be accurately located and within +/- 5 meters of their actual location on the topographic base map. This accuracy diminishes in areas where the topography is either flat or very steep, or where the geologic feature of interest is difficult to discern. For example, contacts between surficial units are often difficult to discern and are considered to be approximately located despite being attributed as accurately located. The 1:24,000 topographic maps and corresponding Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) that were used as the primary mapping base for this project were assumed to meet the National Map Accuracy Standard of +/- 12 meters. The scanned source maps, which were georeferenced to the DRG's, all had registration errors of less than +/- 12 meters and most had errors of less than +/- 5 meters. (Note: Refer to the metadata report for a specific feature class of interest for more detailed information about the positional accuracy of the features). Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Geologic features (outlined in Supplemental Information) were identified on black and white, 1:24,000-scale aerial photographs that were taken in 1974. The features were compiled on 1:24,000-scale paper USGS topographic base maps. These compilation maps were field-checked, then scanned on an HP800 scanner/copier at 300 dpi and saved in .TIF format. The .TIF files were each georeferenced in ArcMap to the corresponding 1:24,000-scale DRG, using a 1st-order polynomial transformation. The geologic features were then heads-up digitized by the principle investigator (George Billingsley) in Arcview 3.2 using the scanned compilation maps and the DRGs as a guide; digitizing scale was approximately 1:6,000. The shapefiles subsequently were converted into GeoDatabase feature classes. The ArcCatolog process 'Create new polygon feature class from lines and points' was used to create geologic unit polygons (vlglg_poly_24k) from geologic contacts and faults (vlglg_arc) and geologic unit labels (vlglg_pt). Each feature class was symbolized based on attributes and plotted at 1:24,000-scale and compared to the source maps. Errors were edited as needed to achieve an error-free database. Addtional attributes were added to some feature classes to facilitate generalization of the features for use at 1:100,000-scale. (Note: Refer to the metadata report for a specific feature class of interest for more detailed information about the process step associated with the features).
