Description:
Abstract: This is one of five world charts showing the declination, inclination, horizontal intensity, vertical component, and total intensity of the Earth's magnetic field at mean sea level at the beginning of 2005. This particular data set is for the secular variation of declination of the Earth's magnetic field. The charts are based on the 10th generation International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF-10) main model for 2005 and secular change model for 2005-2010. The IGRF is referenced to the World Geodetic System 1984 ellipsoid.
Purpose: This map is intended to show the Earth's main magnetic field and its annual rate of change (secular variation) based on the 10th generation International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF-10). The IGRF is a mathematical model of the Earth's main magnetic field and its secular variation based upon data from magnetic observatories and satellite magnetic missions.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report: This data set is based on a mathematical model of the the Earth's magnetic field. The accuracy of any magnetic field component attribute is dependent on the model's ability to calculate the Earth's magnetic field at any location on Earth.
Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon and chain-node topology are present.
Completeness_Report: A circular void of diameter 0.75 degrees was created around the north and south magnetic poles to avoid any problems that these singularities present when calculating and contouring the magnetic field near these locations.

Process_Description: The associated secular variation of declination, based on the 10th generation International Geomagnetic Reference Field, was calculated for a grid of points, having a latitude and longitude spacing of 0.1 degrees. The data were imported into a grid and contoured using ArcGIS. The desired contours for the map were selected and polygon and arc topology were ascertained as well as appropriate feature attributes.
