Mex. Pre- Tertiary rocks exposed on the eastern and western margins of the rift basin include Proterozoic crystalline rocks overlain by a discontinuous section ranging from Pennsylvanian through Late Cretaceous in age. Deposits exposed within the Albuquerque Basin of the rift consist of Oligocene through Pleistocene continental bolson and fluvial deposits of the Santa Fe Group. Post-Santa Fe Group deposits include Pleistocene basaltic and andesitic rocks, Pleistocene fluvial terrace-fill deposits, and extensive Pleistocene and Holocene surficial eolian and alluvial units. Gravity data and information obtained from deep oil-exploration wells in the area show that this part of the Rio Grande rift consists of several discrete deep basins (Tertiary fill as thick as 4.9 km) bounded by north- and northwest-striking faults and buried ridges. Stratigraphic evidence suggests at least one of these ridges results from late Pliocene to Pleistocene uplift relative to surrounding geomorphic surfaces; others may also reflect uplift, or may simply represent blocks that subsided less during the long history of rifting. Available age information indicates the Middle to Late Miocene was the time of greatest subsidence in this part of the rift, and that the rate of sediment accumulation and concomitant subsidence declined significantly during Pliocene and Pleistocene time. Upper Miocene to Pleistocene alluvial and fluvial sediment of the Santa Fe Group records significant changes in rift sedimentation. These include a change from a closed basin with playa facies in the centers of subbasins, to a through-going drainage (Rio Grande) with widespread fluvial deposits from northern and western tributaries, and shifts in active tectonics from the basin margin to intrabasin faults. The Santa Fe Group sediments in the map area consist of western-margin deposits mapped as the Ceja Formation, central-basin fluvial deposits (ancestral Rio Grande), and eastern-margin piedmont-slope deposits. The lowermost Ceja Formation northwest of the map area is channeled into the underlying fine- to medium-grained Oligocene-Miocene sandstone and siltstone units, but it may rest conformably on older sediment in the structurally lowest parts of the map area. The Ceja Formation consists of coarse gravelly (boulders as large as 1 by 2 m) sandstone in exposures along the Rio Puerco valley margin in the northwestern part of the map area and contains smaller boulders and cobbles in eastern exposures along the Rio Grande valley. A broad, braided fluvial system transported sediments from western and northwestern sources. Ceja Formation sediments contain more fine-grained intervals, and fewer gravel- and more pumice-bearing intervals eastward and southeastward in the direction of fluvial transport. Dated and geochemically correlated pumice units within the Ceja Formation show that rates of sedimentation were on the order of 50-100 m per million years in the eastern basin along the Rio Grande valley and slowed considerably to the west. No Pliocene fluvial deposits younger than about 2.58 Ma have been identified in the western fluvial deposits. However, finer grained sediments (unit of San Clemente (Qsc)) pumice clast dated at 1.21±0.03 Ma) suggest a shift in style of sedimentation related either to climate, tectonics, stream capture of western-headwater streams, or other geomorphic conditions within the Albuquerque Basin. Degree of soil development on most of the Llano de Albuquerque shows that the latest Pliocene and early Pleistocene was a time of stability on the western side of the Albuquerque Basin. Exposures of fluvial deposits east of the Rio Grande contain pumice clasts and ashes of many early Pleistocene eruptions of the Jemez Mountains volcanic field, including pre-Bandelier Tuff pumice clasts (the informal San Diego Canyon ignimbrite?) (1.7±0.04 Ma), lower Bandelier Tuff (1.64±0.04 Ma and 1.65±0.04 Ma), Cerro Toledo Rhyolite ash (1.55±0.8 Ma and 1.55 Ma), upper Bandelier Tuff (1.22 to 1.2 Ma), and perhaps early Valles Rhyolite domes (Jemez Mountains volcanic field). Pluvial-interpluvial climate cycles during the Pleistocene led to intervals of valley incision and aggradation. Three major fluvial- terrace groups are discontinuously preserved in the Isleta Reservation area. The highest and oldest terrace contains the 640-ka Lava Creek B ash (site 37) located just north of Isleta volcanic center. The intermediate terrace contains 156-ka lava approximately 20 km to the north, and is overlain by the approximately 100-ka lava of the Cat Hills. The lowest terrace is inset below the intermediate terrace. The valley of the Rio Grande was 22-25 m deeper and has backfilled during Holocene time. Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene volcanoes and intrusions are exposed in the western half of the map area. The older igneous rocks include 8.3±0.02 Ma basaltic rocks of Mohinas Mountains, 4.1±0.16 Ma basaltic flows of Wind Mesa, 3.80±0.04 Ma to 3.91±0.04 Ma andesitic vents, flows, and intrusive rocks of the older Los Lunas volcano (El Cerro de Los Lunas), 3.4±0.4 Ma andesitic plug of Cerro Tomé, 3.0±0.01 Ma basaltic flow at Cat Mesa, and basaltic edifices of Isleta and Black Mesa field with dates that range from 2.68 to 2.79 Ma. Pleistocene eruptive units include the trachyandesitic rocks of younger Los Lunas volcano (El Cerro de Los Lunas), which range from about 1.01 Ma to 1.31 Ma and cinder cones and extensive basaltic flows of the Cat Hills, which range from 140±38 ka to 98±20 ka but probably erupted around 100 ka. The deformation history in the map area begins with Proterozoic ductile shortening and greenschist-grade metamorphism, intrusion by large igneous bodies, and repeated uplift throughout the Late Proterozoic and early Paleozoic. Regional uplift and basin formation of the ancestral Rocky Mountains from Pennsylvanian through mid-Permian time played a minor role in sedimentation/erosion of rocks exposed in the Manzano and Manzanita Mountains uplifts. Upper Permian through Upper Cretaceous rocks reflect episodic sedimentation in continental or marginal marine settings. Laramide deformation is seen in compressional reverse faults and folds of the Proterozoic-Mesozoic strata of the eastern part of the map area, and created pre-rift continental basins beneath the later Albuquerque Basin of the Rio Grande rift. A blanket of mid-Tertiary volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks separates the early Tertiary basins from the later Tertiary and Quaternary Rio Grande rift. Rift-related faults include early north-trending, northwest-trending, and northeast-trending structures that separate subbasins. Faults along the eastern edge of the Colorado Plateau and along the front of the Manzanita and Manzano Mountains also show these early orientations. The Pliocene-Pleistocene surfaces preserved in the map area show the predominance of north-south normal faults creating many zones of intrabasinal tilting. From west to east, 12 major fault zones include the South Garcia, Mohinas Mountain, Cat Mesa, Wind Mesa (western and eastern strands), Cedar Wash, Palace-Pipeline, McCormick Ranch, Hubbell Spring (western and main), Colorada, Meadow Lake, and frontal faults of the Manzanita and northern Manzano Mountains. Ground-water resources within the map area are likely to be restricted by the lithologic character of the Santa Fe Group geologic units in the subsurface. The Oligocene-Miocene part (Tp) of the Santa Fe Group primarily consists of fine- to medium-grained sands, silts, and clay with moderate to low porosity. The Pliocene fluvial deposits (Tcc, Tcu, Tcm, Tcl, Tca, and Tc) are generally coarser than the older units and consist chiefly of fine- to medium-grained pebbly sands and silts in the center of the map area (Tc) where it is saturated. The lower Pleistocene fluvial deposits (Qg and Qsg) that consist of coarse sand and gravel make a good aquifer where they are present below the water table. Potential locations may occur along the eastern edge of the Rio Grande valley. Purpose: To conduct new geologic mapping and to provide geologic information for land-use decisions and water management, as part of the U.S. Geological Survey's Middle Rio Grande Project. The attributes of this geospatial data set consist of text identifiers and numeric codes that indicate the identity of the geologic unit or type of geologic feature, and determine how each feature is colored or symbolized. To check attribute accuracy, a color check plot was visually compared to the geologist's original compilation. Discrepancies between the digital geospatial dataset and the original analog compilation were corrected as needed. Machine- created listings of unique attribute values were used to identify spelling errors or other inconsistencies, and corrections were made as needed. This map has been thoroughly reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon closure, and other errors by the author and by the GIS technician(s) that created the digital database. Automated (ArcInfo) routines were also used to check the databases for polygon label errors, line or point attribution errors, sliver polygons, dangling arcs, intersection errors, and projection information. Check plots of the map were reviewed by at least two other geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. Completeness_Report: Data are complete. No features that could be accurately represented at the compilation scale of 1:50,000 were eliminated or generalized. All geospatial database elements are attributed. Process_Date: 1999 Process_Step: Process_Description: The map data were exported to ARC/INFO using the GSMCAD export function to create ARC generate ASCII files. The ASCII files were then imported into ArcInfo using the GENERATE routine, and polygon topology built. Process_Date: 1999 Process_Step: Process_Description: Text map unit descriptors were added to the .AAT and .PAT database files for each coverage. Process_Date: 2001 Process_Step: Process_Description: Draft check plots of the geologic map and explanation were created and submitted for peer review. Geologists reviewed the plots for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. Revisions were made to the geospatial database as needed. Process_Date: 2002 Process_Step: Process_Description: The database files, metadata, and check plots were edited by the USGS Central Publications Group, and revisions made to the geospatial database as needed. Process_Date: 2005 Process_Step: Process_Description: The geospatial database files and metadata were quality checked for completeness and consistency.
