The map is based on detailed 1:12,000-scale field mapping, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, mineral mapping by remote sensing (AVIRIS) data, and 1:24,000-scale aerial photographic interpretation. Geologic structures were compiled and generalized from multiple published and unpublished sources (Burbank and Luedke, 1964; Steven and others, 1974; Luedke and Burbank 1975a, b; Lipman, 1976; Luedke and Burbank, 1987; Luedke, 1996) (see Index Map). Unpublished mapping of the Ironton quadrangle by D.J. Bove and J.P. Kurtz in 1997-1999 was included. Purpose: This map was produced to provide hard-copy and digital data for alteration assemblages in the historical mining area centered on the Tertiary San Juan and Silverton calderas. The data have direct application to geoenvironmental and mineral exploration objectives. Supplemental_Information: This product consists of three vector coverages. These separate coverages include the alteration layer (altfin) and combined, certain and inferred fault or vein layers (fvcert and fvinfer, respectively). Native_Data_Set_Environment: ArcInfo 7.2.1, Sun Unix platform and ArcGIS v. 9.1 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: All alteration unit and fault and vein structure attributes were compared to paper maps for accuracy when compiled and digitized. Fault and vein structures were adjusted to correspond with identifiable and corresponding features observed on 1-m USGS digital orthophoto (DOQ) maps. DOQ’s provided higher resolution imagery (than was available previously) to correct positioning of some structural features. A quantitative assessment of attribute accuracy was not attempted. Frequency tests were run on the arc and polygon labels to ensure that no features are unlabeled. The attributes have been checked by both the authors and the reviewers for agreement with published maps, unpublished field mapping, and preliminary drafted versions of the map. Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon and chain-node topology present. Each polygon is closed and has one label point. Polygon and chain-node topology present. Completeness_Report: Completeness of the data is a function of source maps used, vegetation cover in some subbasins, and field checking accomplished in the course of mapping altered bedrock regions. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The estimated horizontal positional accuracy of the data is 10 m. All data used from published and unpublished digital sources are limited by the accuracy of those data. Attempts were made to verify the accuracy of these data by comparison to published topographic data and overlap with other digital data. FVCERT and FVINFER coverages--Contain combined faults and veins. The coverage fvcert contains faults and veins that are certain; the coverage fvinfer contains inferred or concealed faults and veins. The FVCERT.AAT and FVINFER INFO files have attribute fields for INFO ITEMS LINE-ID and NAME. LINE-ID corresponds to a unique numeric arc identifier that relates to each fault or vein; NAME corresponds to the designation “Fault or vein--Certain” and “Fault or vein—Inferred.” ALTFIN coverage--Contains all alteration type polygons. The ALTFIN.AAT and ALTFIN INFO files have attribute fields for INFO ITEMS ALTFIN-ID and CONTACT. ALTFIN-ID corresponds to a unique numeric arc identifier that relates to each line type; CONTACT corresponds to the designation “Approximate,” “Certain,” “Inferred,” or “Map boundary.” The ALTFIN.PAT and ALTFIN INFO files contain the attribute items ALTFIN-ID and NEW_NAME.
