Digital representation of geologic mapping facilitates the presentation and analysis of earth-science data. Digital maps may be displayed at any scale or projection, however the geologic data in this coverage is not intended for use at a scale larger than 1:250,000.

    Linework was captured by scanning inked mylar overlays or paper maps to create TIFF files that were then "heads-up" digitized on screen. After vectorization, the linework was imported to Arc/Info coverages, and attribute values set for the data in ARC/INFO workstation. The digital data has been visually checked and the geologic map has undergone technical review. Vector data was then imported to an ESRI Geodatabase using ArcGIS 9.3.1, and the map was symbolized in ArcMap.

    Users of this digital geologic map should respect the intentions of the original mappers and the limitations of the map. This geologic map compilation is intended to be used at a scale of 1:250,000; it is not intended to be used at a more detailed scale.

    These ArcGIS featureclasses were used to create the map portion of SIM 3036. Text files, tables, graphics, and symbolsets shown on the map sheet are not included.

    Featureclass noatak_geo_polygon contains polygons representing geologic map units or water bodies. Each polygon has a coded attribute designating the mapped geologic unit. There is an associated lookup data table, noa_poly4_lut, that is used to assign polygon fill colors to map unit areas. Some polygons are also filled with patterns.

    Featureclass noatak_geo_arc contains arcs representing stratigraphic contacts and water boundaries.
    Featureclass noatak_arrow_arc contains lines for directional arrows indicating directions of glacial movement.
    Featureclass neat_arc contains a neat line marking the edge of the mapped area.
    Featureclass noa_npb_arc contains a neat line marking the boundary of the Noatak National Preserve.
    Featureclass noa_qb_arc contains lines marking the boundaries of 1:250,000 scale quadrangles.
    Featureclass UID_Leaders contains leader lines for geologic map unit labels which could not be placed within the area of the map unit.

    Featureclass noatak_pnt_point contains points representing pingos, springs, and mountain passes.
    Featureclass noatak_town_point contains a point representing the one town in the mapped area.
