Publication_Date: 2008 Title: Geologic map of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary strata and coal stratigraphy of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation, Rawlins-Little Snake River area, south-central Wyoming Edition: version 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: map Series_Information: Series_Name: USGS Scientific Investigations Map Issue_Identification: Scientific Investigations Map 3053 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Denver, Colorado Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3053 Description: Abstract: This report provides a map and detailed descriptions of geologic formations for a 1,250 square mile region in the Rawlins–Little Snake River coal field in the eastern part of the Washakie and Great Divide Basins of south-central Wyoming. Mapping of geologic formations and coal beds was conducted at a scale of 1:24,000 and compiled at a scale of 1:100,000. Emphasis was placed on coal-bearing strata of the China Butte and Overland Members of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation. Surface stratigraphic sections were measured and described and well logs were examined to determine the lateral continuity of individual coal beds; the coal-bed stratigraphy is shown on correlation diagrams. A structure contour and overburden map constructed on the uppermost coal bed in the China Butte Member is also provided. Purpose: The data set was collected to acquire data on Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary coal-bearing strata in the eastern Washakie and southeastern Great Divide Basins. These regions of south-central Wyoming have potential for coal development and were considered previously for coal leasing by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. This map was thoroughly reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards and stratigraphic nomenclature. Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked by the authors, cartographers, and editor for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon attributes, and other errors. The coverages were cleaned in ARC/INFO to ensure logical consistency that is topologically clean. The map was reviewed by other geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. Completeness_Report: This dataset is complete and includes the spatial coverages pertaining to the geologic map. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Users of this digital geologic map should respect the intentions of the original mappers and the map compilers, and the limitations of the map. The geology data set is intended to be used at a scale of 1:100,000. It is not intended to be used at a more detailed scale. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Most of the geologic mapping was based on field observations, analysis of black and white aerial photographs (scale 1:28,000 and 1:20,000, flown in 1975) and color aerial photographs (scale 1:36,000, flown in 1975), and drill-hole data. Some mapping was compiled from previously published investigations. All sources of data are referenced in figure 2 of the report. Geologic contacts were selected and transferred onto 1:24,000-scale topographic base maps. The resulting maps were reduced in scale and transferred onto the 1:100,000-scale topographic bases of the Baggs and Rawlins 30 x 60-minute quadrangles. The resulting line work was digitized using ArcMap 9.1. The structure contour and overburden map of the uppermost coal bed in the China Butte Member of the Fort Union Formation was determined from geophysical well logs and outcrops mapped at a scale of 1:24,000. Structure elevations and overburden thickness were contoured manually at a scale of 1:24,000 and transferred onto the 1:100,000-scale topographic base of the Baggs and Rawlins 30 x 60-minute quadrangles. The resulting line work was digitized using ArcMap 9.1. Coal-bed correlations were constructed from stratigraphic sections measured in the field, interpretations of geophysical logs from numerous coal test holes, and correlations made from outcrops and photogeologic mapping.
