Publisher: United States Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3059 Description: Abstract: This digital publication contains the spatial database used to publish the geologic map in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3059 (Rosenberg and Clark, 2009). The Rinconada Fault and its related faults constitute a major structural element of the Salinas River valley, which is known regionally, and referred to herein, as the "Salinas Valley." The Rinconada Fault extends 230 km from King City in the north to the Big Pine Fault in the south. At the south end of the map area near Santa Margarita, the Rinconada Fault separates granitic and metamorphic crystalline rocks of the Salinian Block to the northeast from the subduction-zone assemblage of the Franciscan Complex to the southwest. Northwestward, the Rinconada Fault lies entirely within the Salinian Block and generally divides this region into two physiographically and structurally distinct areas, the Santa Lucia Range to the west and the Salinas Valley to the east. The Reliz Fault, which continues as a right stepover from the Rinconada Fault, trends northwestward along the northeastern base of the Sierra de Salinas of the Santa Lucia Range and beyond for 60 km to the vicinity of Spreckels, where it is largely concealed. Aeromagnetic data suggest that the Reliz Fault continues northwestward another 25 km into Monterey Bay, where it aligns with a high-definition magnetic boundary (R.C. Jachens, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 2002). Geomorphic evidence of late Quaternary movement along the Rinconada and Reliz Fault Zones has been documented by Tinsley (1975), Dibblee (1976, 1979), Hart (1976, 1985), and Klaus (1999). Although definitive geologic evidence of Holocene surface rupture has not been found on these faults, they were regarded as an earthquake source for the California Geological Survey [formerly, California Division of Mines and Geology]/U.S. Geological Survey (CGS/USGS) Probabilistic Seismic Hazards Assessment because of their postulated slip rate of 1±1 mm/yr and their calculated maximum magnitude of 7.3 (Petersen and others, 1996, p. A-7). Except for published reports by Durham (1965, 1974), Dibblee (1976), and Hart (1976), most information on these faults is unpublished or is contained in theses, field trip guides, and other types of reports. This report follows the format of Dibblee (1976) and includes discussions of the sections of the Rinconada Fault and of the Reliz Fault, as well as their Neogene history and key localities. Accompanying this report is a geologic map database of the faults, key localities, and earthquake epicenters, in ESRI shapefile format. Purpose: This database was constructed in order to produce a map that shows the location of faults within the Rinconada and Reliz Fault Zones along with new data from exploratory trenches, geomorphic analyses, and geophysical surveys. Supplemental_Information: The spatial database used to publish the map in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3059 is contained in this digital publication. This metadata document contains information for the set of shapefiles included in this database. Where relevant information for an individual shapefile differs from that of the others, each shapefile is documented separately in sequence in that metadata section. These data should not be used for purposes of site-specific land-use planning or site-specific geologic evaluations. Uses of this map database should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. The map database was compiled from many sources with different scales. The map was published as a scale of 1:250,000 to provide an overview of Rinconada and Reliz Faults Zones and to enable printing the map on one sheet. Although the digital form of these data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. Because this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution data. Acknowledgement of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data. Point_of_Contact: Contact_Information: Contact_Person_Primary: Contact_Person: Lewis I. Rosenberg from published geologic mapping and unpublished fault trenching studies. Preparation of this map and report were sponsored jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey, the California Geological Survey, and the San Luis Obispo County Planning and Building Department. Technical review by John C. Tinsley and Taryn A. Lindquist (both USGS) and William A. Bryant (California Geological Survey) led to significant improvements that eventually were reflected in aspects of the map database, the plot file, and in the report text. Native_Data_Set_Environment: Microsoft Windows XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 2; ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.1.1850 Data_Quality_Information: Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon and arc (chain-node) topology present in appropriate polyline shapefiles. Other shapefiles are point format and do not require topologic relationships. Completeness_Report: The fault map database of the study area was compiled from various sources, with scales ranging from site (1:600) to regional (mainly 1:24,000 and 1:62,500). Only certain areas of this compiled work was field checked. These areas were mainly trenching sites, roadcut and railroad-cut exposures, the San Antonio damsite, and the Spreckels 7.5' quadrangle. However, this map database is considered to represent the current state of knowledge in the study area as of the publication date. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Paper maps were scanned, geoferenced, and digitized to create this compilation. In addition, geologic maps with different topographic bases were digitized, which results in some uncertainty in the absolute fault locations. Most of the source maps do not specify their accuracy standards. Therefore, the horizontal accuracy is unknown. However, plots of this map database were compared to the original source material and appear to match the source data. Publisher: Northern California Earthquake Data Center Online_Linkage: http://www.ncedc.org/ncedc/catalog-search.html Type_of_Source_Media: online Source_Citation_Abbreviation: NCEDC (2009) Source_Contribution: Earthquake epicenters Process_Step: Process_Description: The various maps used in the compilation were converted to digital format using large-format scanners at a resolutions ranging from 250 to 400 dots per inch. The scanned images were saved as uncompressed TIFF files and georeferenced to using ArcGIS software. Faults were traced from the scanned images using "heads-up" digitizing. In some cases, fault locations were available in vector format and were reprojected to match the rest of the data. Process_Description: To evaluate the regional seismicity, earthquake epicenters occurring from January 1, 1967 to August 29, 2008 and having magnitudes of 2 or greater in the USGS Northern California Seismic Network catalog were downloaded from the Northern California Earthquake Data Center (NCEDC) website (http://www.ndedc.org). The epicenters were imported into Microsoft Excel, parsed into columns, and exported in DBF format. The DBF file was imported into ArcView 3.2, converted into an event theme, and was saved as a shapefile. The shapefile was imported into ArcGIS 9.2, projected geographically, and clipped to the study-area boundary. To obtain a catalog of well-located earthquakes, we used the field calculator in ArcGIS 9.2 to write queries which excluded events that have less than six reporting stations and RMS travel-time residuals of 0.2 seconds or more. In order to include events in the western offshore part of the study area, we did not apply an azimuthal gap filter (an angular gap in degrees between the epicenter and two adjacent stations). The resulting catalog is included in the GIS database (2008quakesfilter.shp). Epicenters that were spatially related to the Rinconada and Reliz Fault Zones were manually selected from the earthquake catalog (2008quakesfilter.shp) and saved as a subset of the GIS database (2008rinconadaquakes.shp). Process_Description: The topographic base was created from the Monterey (USGS, 1998a) and San Luis Obispo (USGS, 1998b) Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) files. The DRGs were converted from RGB to bitmapped images using Adobe Photoshop CS2. The collar information from the DRGs was clipped and the DRGs were overlain and composited into a flattened image with Photoshop. Finally, the image was saved as an uncompressed TIFF bitmap image at a resolution of 300 dots per inch (dpi)and was georeferenced to mathematically generated coordinates using ArcGIS 9.2. Process_Description: The hillshade base was created from Digital Elevation Model (DEM) files from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) website (http://seamless.usgs.gov). Two files, one for the northern part (NED, 2007a) and one for the southern part (NED, 2007b) of the study area, having a resolution of one arc-second (~30m resolution) were downloaded as ArcGrid format files. Using ArcGIS 9.2, the DEMs were projected into UTM Zone 10 (NAD 1983 datum) and converted to a shaded relief image using the "hillshade" toolbox in ArcGIS Spatial Analyst 9.2, with a light-source azimuth of 315 degrees and altitude of 45 degrees. The two shaded relief images were mosaicked in ArcGIS and exported as an uncompressed TIFF grayscale 300 dpi image. The join lines between the north and south parts (appearing as seam lines in the software interface) were locally adjusted to blend the images using Adobe Photoshop CS2. Finally, the image was flattened image and saved as an uncompressed TIFF grayscale 300 dpi image.
