Data_Set_Credit: This file is a subset of the original multibeam bathymetric data collected in June 2004 aboard the R/V Maurice Ewing as part of cruise EW0408 to investigate marine paleoclimatic proxies. This work was funded by the National Science Foundation ((NSF# OCE 0351089, to Powell). A Kongsberg Simrad EM-1002 multibeam echosounder was used to collect bathymetric and acoustic backscatter data. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Benthic habitat and seafloor substrate mapping for Muir Inlet were conducted using multibeam sonar data that were collected onboard the R/V Maurice Ewing cruise EW0408 on September 7, 2004. A Kongsberg Simrad EM-1002 multibeam echosounder was installed on the Ewing for the purposes of high-resolution bathymetric surveying specific to the shallow to intermediate depth of the southern Alaska study locations. The EM-1002 simultaneously collects both bathymetric and co-registered backscatter data, providing information about seafloor morphology and composition. The EM-1002 used a fixed +/- 75 degree, 400 m fixed maximum swath. Navigation was recorded by a C-Nav ultra-high resolution differential global positioning system with maximum accuracy of < 0.1 m horizontally and 0.2 m vertically. Vessel roll, pitch, and heave were recorded with a POS-MV motion sensor. This information was integrated in the Simrad software with water column CTD data, positioning from the C-Nav, and offset information between the transducer, antenna, and motion sensor to correct for ship motion and produce accurate depth measurements. A team of University of New Hampshire (UNH) scientists using CARIS HIPS and the CUBE algorithm within IVS3D Fledermaus processed on board data. Further processing of backscatter data was later completed using Geocoder software by Luciano Fonseca of UNH to remove data artifacts and enhance details (cf. Fonseca and Calder 2005). Data were cleaned for errant points, referenced to mean lower low water (MLLW) by correcting for tide, and finally transformed into depth versus absolute position. The bathymetry and backscatter data were gridded using a 5.5 m, and 2.5 m horizontal grid resolutions, respectively. These data cover about 75 km2 or nearly 70% of Muir Inlet extending from the just below sea level to over 300 m depth in the deepest fjord basins, from its southern entrance sill to the Muir Glacier delta in its northern reaches.
