Irwin (Irwin, 1985), with various improvements and additions. It was compiled by Irwin and C.M. Wentworth from the MF map, supplemented by field notes and field sheets in the possession of W.P. Irwin. The map shows the general distribution of bedrock and surficial deposits of the Hyampom 15-minute quadrangle, together with structural data, fossil localities, and the location of prospect pits. Geologic map units are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey. This geologic map has been compiled at a scale of 1:50,000, in order to be compatible with the earlier released geologic maps of the Weaverville and Hayfork 15' quadrangles (Irwin, 2009, 2010), but the reconnaissance nature of the work and the 1:62,500-scale of most of the source materials make the locational accuracy and detail in the map and database layers only approximate. Purpose: The digital database provides the geologic map in digital form, permitting graphic presentation in color on a colored topographic base, and includes as complete and legible a set of structural data as possible. The original MF publication is black and white, including the base, and is extremely difficult to read. It should be noted that cultural information in the base map and the locations of prospects are current as of 1951 (base map) or the early 1980s. The 15-minute topographic series has long been abandoned by the U.S. Geological Survey, but was the best regional scale for the map at the time it was originally prepared. Because the author compilations were originally prepared at 1:50,000 for later reduction to MF publication scale of 1:62,500, it was reasonable here to compile at 1:50,000. This database and accompanying graphic map image depict the distribution of geologic materials and structures at a regional (1:50,000) scale. The report is intended to show the geologic framework and geologic history of the region, and to aid in the search for new deposits of minerals, particularly gold. Supplemental_Information: Procedures_Used: The digital database in this report was compiled in workstation Arc-Info, version 8.2,a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California), with version 3.0 of the menu interface ALACARTE (Fitzgibbon and Wentworth, 1991; Fitzgibbon, 1991; Wentworth and Fitzgibbon, 1991). The files are in either GRID (Arc-Info raster data) format or COVERAGE (Arc-Info vector data) format. Coverages are stored in uncompressed ARC export format. Arc-Info export files (files with the .e00 extension) can be converted into Arc-Info coverages in Arc-Info (see below) and can be read by some other Geographic Information Systems, such as MapInfo via ArcLink and ESRI's ArcMap and ArcView. The geologic map information was digitized on-screen over raster scans of paper and mylar originals. Geographic registration was accomplished by defining locations of the quadrangle corners in the scanned images relative to locations calculated in Arc-Info and warping the images to those constraints. The GIS data model is that of ALACARTE, which is similar to the single geologic map model of Gautier (1999), and SGM-like tables to define values of PTYPE (geologic unit labels) and LTYPE (line types) are included. Revisions: Please see the ASCII text file sim3129-version.txt for information about any revisions to this report. Reviews_Applied_to_Data: The 1985 MF version of this report was scientifically reviewed at that time. The present report has also undergone two scientific peer reviews, one digital database review, one review for conformity with geologic names policy, and review of the map graphic for conformity with USGS map standards. Related_Spatial_and_Tabular_Data_Sets: This report consists of a set of geologic map database files (Arc-Info coverages), and graphic files of the assembled geologic map (pdf format). The base map layer used in the preparation of the geologic map graphic was prepared by scanning a colored topographic map (paper) at a scale of 1:62,500, converting that to an RGB grid stack in Arc-Info, and applying a set of processing steps to isolate the culture, contours, and drainage in a single raster grid. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:50,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset; in fact, even a scale of 1:50,000 suggests higher resolution than is present, given the reconnaissance nature of the mapping and compilation largely from 1:62.500 materials. Plotting at scales larger than 1:50,000-1:62,500 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Small limestone bodies mappable only at larger scale are represented by points (sim3129-pts) and map symbols. The detail of field mapping was of reconnaissance quality; all geologic mapping can be refined by more detailed field work and/or examination of artificial excavations. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Well located data items are intended to have a horizontal positional accuracy within about 0.5 mm at 1:50,000 scale, or about 30 meters on the ground. The general positional accuracy of each line in the database is indicated within the LTYPE field in the Arc Attribute Table (see below). Points in the database are generally considered to be similarly well located. The position of each data item is located relative to the USGS topographic base map, and any locational inaccuracies in the base map are therefore inherent in the geologic locations as well. Most of the attributes in the various attribute tables of the coverages included in the report are set or calculated by Arc-Info. The exceptions are "coveragename"-ID, LTYPE, PTYPE, PTTYPE, STRIKE, DIP, and the several descriptive fields in the sim3129-fosl coverage. "coveragename"-ID is required by internal policy to be sequential. This ensures the highest compatibility of our databases with other GISs. Therefore "coveragename"-ID is calculated equal to "coveragename"#, which is a unique, sequential integer assigned by Arc-Info to each data record. LTYPE, PTYPE, and PTTYPE are author added items to the coverage AAT or PAT that are used to describe the type of line (LTYPE), area (PTYPE), or point (PTTYPE) being recorded. All coverages with AAT and PAT present include one of these items in the data structure. Each has WIDTH 35, OUTPUT 35, TYPE C. STRIKE and DIP are author added items to the coverage PAT that record information about the orientation of planar or linear features. Both have WIDTH 3, OUTPUT 3, TYPE I. LONG, LAT, X-COORD, AND Y-COORD are floating point number fields; MAP# and LOC are integer fields, and FIELD#, USGS#, and COMMENT are character fields.
