Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3141 Description: Abstract: This geographically referenced raster dataset consists of two fractional water maps, two land/water maps and a change analysis map. The attribute values of each 30 meter pixel in the fractional water maps range from 0-100% and represent an estimate of the percentage of underlying area covered by water, where 0 represents solid land and 100 represents open water (including ponds, lakes, canals and the Gulf of Mexico). The land/water maps are derived by thresholding the fractional water maps at such a value as to optimize the Kappa coefficient calculated from over 6000 photo-interpreted ground truth points. The change detection map is a difference map between the two land/water maps. This first Scientific Investigations Map focuses on Hurricane Rita, which made landfall on the Louisiana/Texas border on September 24, 2005 as a Category 3 hurricane. The study area is an approximately 1961 square kilometer area in the Chenier Plain that includes and is roughly centered on the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge. Comparison of the classified imagery demonstrate that water areas increased by about 10% between 2003 to 2006. This change is attributed to both permanent wetland loss as a result of the hurricane as well as temporary changes in the water-land configurations such as remnant flooding, the removal of aquatic vegetation and water level variations caused by tidal and / or meteorological variations between the acquisition dates of the satellite images. Purpose: The purpose of this project is to provide improved estimates of Louisiana wetland land loss due to hurricane impacts since 2004 based upon a change detection mapping analysis that incorporates pre and post landfall (Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike) fractional water classification of a combination of QuickBird, IKONOS and Landsat imagery. Supplemental_Information: The Pre-Rita classification is based on Landsat ETM+ scene p024r039 (04/17/2003) and Quickbird scene ID 1010010001EC8A00 (05/23/2003). The Post-Rita classification is based on Landsat TM scene p024r039 (02/12/2006) and IKONOS scene ID 2006032517221290000011614556 (03/25/2006). Publication_Date: 2011 Title: Recent Wetland Land Loss Due to Hurricanes: Improved Estimates Based Upon Multiple Source Images. Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Accuracy assessments were performed on both input datasets using 1000 randomly sampled points over the 1961 square kilometer study area. Ground truth was determined by image interpretation of aerial photographs (2-meter RGB for Pre-Rita and 1-meter CIR for Post-Rita) and the fractional water maps were thresholded at the value that resulted in a maximum Kappa to produce a binary land/water map. The overall accuracy for the area is calculated at 93.7 percent with a Kappa of 86.3% for the 2003 land/water dataset and an overall accuracy of 91.6 percent with a Kappa of 82.5% for the 2006 land/water dataset. Logical_Consistency_Report: The attribute values of each fractional water map were checked to ensure that they do not fall outside the logical range of 0 to 100% and each of the thematic maps were checked to ensure that all pixel codes fall within their respective domains. The files were checked to ensure that they are co-incident, containing data located in the same 1548 by 1408 pixel (side 30 meter) region defined by an upper left pixel of 423420.0/3330750.0 meters, in the UTM zone 15 (North), WGS-84 projection. Completeness_Report: All pixels have been classified, but there are a pair of contrails visible in the 2006 IKONOS training image and several clouds in the 2003 Landsat image which the user should be careful to exclude from any analysis. The total area of these contrail/cloud regions amount to just over 1 percent of the mapped area; a mask image is included with this dataset. No training points were selected from these regions. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Landsat scenes were georeferenced by the USGS EROS Data Center, IKONOS scenes were georeferenced by Geoeye, Inc and QuickBird scenes were georeferenced by Digital Globe, Inc. Minor adjustments were made in the horizontal plane to more closely align them to each other. The horizontal accuracy of the final product was determined to be within 15 m. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: No vertical adjustments were made to the original images. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: The general procedure is: (1) produce a series of vegetation/water indices and transforms of the training image at 4 meter resolution, (2) plot histograms of the images from (1) and select appropriate minima in an repeatable fashion, (3) threshold the indices at the selected minima to determine a land/water binary map at high resolution, (4) count the number of hi-resolution water pixels in each corresponding 30 meter Landsat pixel to obtain the water fraction, (5) produce a series of potential input layers based on the Landsat image, that will be used to predict the fractional water value at moderate resolution. These layers typically included, textures, transforms (Principal Components, Independent Components and Tasseled Cap) and vegetation/water indices. (6) identify a series of inputs to be used for prediction by calculating and comparing input layer correlations, (7) build a prediction model using Cubist data-mining software for each set of inputs identified in (6), (8) apply the models to generate one fractional water map for each set of inputs identified, (9) generate a large population of unambiguous random points (more than 6000 were used for each input map), and classify each as land or water via photo interpretation of aerial corresponding photographs, (10) sample all output maps at these points and calculate for each map the confusion matrix, percentage correctly classified, Kappa coefficient of agreement, receiver operating curve (ROC), area under the curve and p-values of differences in area under the curve. Optimize the process to indicate the threshold that maximizes the Kappa coefficient, (11) threshold each fractional water map at its max-Kappa threshold to produce a land/water map, (12) calculate the difference map. Each pixel of the fractional water maps is an estimate of the percentage of the area on the ground represented by that pixel that is submerged and which did not have substantial floating vegetative cover on the date of image acquisition. Each pixel of the RGB-encoded land/water maps represent either land or water and each pixel of the RGB-encoded change analysis map is assigned one for four permissible values determined by the difference of the input land/water maps. Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation: Pixels of the fractional water maps are encoded as continuous integer values ranging between 0 - 100, where 0 represents solid land and 100 represents open water (including ponds, lakes, canals and the Gulf of Mexico). Values between 0 and 100 proportionately represent fractional water coverage. Pixels of the land/water maps have a binary encoding where water pixels are assigned the RGB value (11 ,17, 126) and land pixels are assinged the RGB value (255, 235, 174). Pixels of the change analysis map are encoded as follows: Class 1, New water areas, RGB (0, 197, 255), Class 2, New land areas, RGB = (255, 0, 0), Class 3, Unchanged land areas, RGB = (255, 235, 175) and Class 4, Unchanged water areas, RGB = (0, 38, 115).
