This mapping was performed in support of multidisciplinary studies involving the predictive modeling of geochemical environments at watershed and regional scales. These studies seek to determine the relative effects of mining and non-anthropogenic hydrothermal alteration on watershed surface water geochemistry and faunal populations. These data have been orthorectified to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection using a projective transform with ground control points and a digital elevation model from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (1/3 arc second, 10m resolution). This map, in ERDAS Imagine (.img) format, has been attributed by pixel value with material identification data that can be queried in most image processing and GIS software packages. Purpose: The purpose of the image is to display iron-bearing minerals, vegetations groups differentiated by variations in greenness and dryness, and volatiles (water and snow) detected using ASTER satellite remote sensing data. The digital number (DN) values in this image have been attributed by material identified through spectroscopic analysis of ASTER data as shown in the following table. Each DN value corresponds to a particular color in the included color table. All pixels identified as a particular material have been assigned a single, discrete color. Certain materials have had a continuous (or gradational) stretch applied in which the brightness of that color for a particular pixel value is indicative of the fit x depth values derived from spectroscopic analysis, with bright shades of color indicating high fit x depth, and successively darker shades indicate lower fit x depth values. Fit x depth is proportional to both the degree of least-squares fit between reference and image spectra, and depth is proportional to material abundance given a constant grain size. For vegetation types, low feature depths may indicate decreased areal abundance and (or) decreased content of plant constituent associated with absorption features(s) being measured (chlorophyll and(or) leaf biochemicals). Pixels in which no material was identified have no material identification attribute, and these pixels are represented in the color table with a gray scale color (red = green = blue), and can either be displayed to show a gray scale background of a single ASTER band, or turned off (for example using ArcMap unique value symbology properties) so that only pixels in which material was identified are shown.
