The primary base for this geologic map consisted of a blended product created by overlaying a time-controlled mosaic of Viking Oribiter images (acquired during 1976 Martian northern summer) at and the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) gridded elevation. Supplemental information used in the identification and description of geologic units and features included MOLA-derived products (cell-to-cell slope, aspect, and color-shaded relief maps), a Context (CTX) camera image mosaic, and the full range of Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS), Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC), High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE), and CTX images via web-linked image footprints within the project GIS. We identify a total of 7 geologic units in the Olympia Rupsregion based on morphologic characteristics, geologic associations, and stratigraphic relations. Purpose: The main purpose of this map is to reconstruct the geologic history of the Olympia Rups region of Mars (quadrangle MTM 85200) at a level of detail commensurate with a scale of 1:500,000 using modern (post-Viking) image and topographic data sets. We identify seven discrete geologic units grouped within two physiographic regions. We interpret these units as records of cyclic episodes of regional to local deposition and intervening periods of erosion. Olympia region units generally represent periods of lithic sand and dust deposition and Boreum region units generally represent periods of dust and ice deposition. The internal physical and compositional characteristics of each group are likely to have been strongly influenced by orbital variations. Four of the mapped units are characterized by some level of internal stratification and each is defined by erosional unconformities at their uppermost surface. The overall geologic sequence in the MTM 85200 quadrangle represents a distinctly hybridized suite of polar and lowland plains styles of resurfacing. Geologic activity collectively resulted in the formation of deep curvilinear troughs and chasmata, isolated cavi, and scarps and slopes located marginal to the north polar plateau (Planum Boreum).
