Shimel Publication_Date: 2012 Title: Geologic Map of the East Half of the Bellevue South 7.5'x 15' Quadrangle, Issaquah Area, King County, Washington Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3211 Description: Abstract: The Issaquah quadrangle includes several of the most outstanding geologic features of the eastern Puget Lowland. These include folds that warp thousands of meters of Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Several hundred meters of both glacial and postglacial sediment have accumulated in a deep glacial trough, now partly occupied by Lake Sammamish, but which was previously the conduit for massive volumes of meltwater during ice-sheet occupation and retreat. The eastern projection of an east-west crustal structure, which reflects Tertiary through Holocene fault displacement, also extends across the map area (Gower and others, 1985; Yount and others, 1985). In addition, some of the most rapid human alteration of the landscape in the entire Puget Lowland has occurred in the quadrangle?since the 19th century by extensive coal mining and since the early 1980s by urbanization. In places, thisalteration has dramatically accelerated the rate of geomorphic processes. These changes are best expressed here by massive regrading of the hillsides throughout the southern one-third of the quadrangle by mines and quarries, by recent stream-channel incision above the eastern shores of Lake Sammamish and by sediment deposition on the shore and into the lake itself. Purpose: This database and accompanying plot files depict the distribution of geologic materials and structures at 1:24,000 scale. The report is intended to provide geologic information for the study of materials properties, earthquake shaking, landslide potential, mineral hazards, seismic velocity, and earthquake faults. In addition, the report contains new information and interpretations about the regional geologic history and framework. However, the scale of this report does not provide sufficient detail for site development purposes. SPATIAL RESOLUTION- Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine- scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Each coverage contains formal XML-format metadata with complete entity-and-attribute information, including extensive definitions of feature-attribute values. Also included are a brief readme file and a large (12 MB) image in TIFF format that combines geologic map-unit colors with a shaded-relief image of topography.
