The geologic map includes revisions of numerous unit contacts and faults and a number of previously undifferentiated rock units were subdivided in some areas. Numerous circular-shaped hills in and around Chickasaw National Recreation Area are probably the result of karst-related collapse and may represent the erosional remnants of large, exhumed sinkholes. Geospatial registration of existing, smaller scale (1:72,000- and 1:100,000-scale) geologic maps of the area, and construction of an accurate GIS database, preceded two years of fieldwork wherein previously mapped geology (unit contacts and faults) was verified and new geologic mapping was carried out. The geologic map of Chickasaw National Recreation Area and an accompanying pamphlet present this mapping effort and the pamphlet includes information regarding how the geologic units and structural features in the map area relate to the formation of the northern Arbuckle Mountains and its Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer. The development of an accurate geospatial GIS database and the use of a handheld computer in the field greatly increased both the accuracy and efficiency in producing this 1:24,000-scale geologic map. Purpose: To provide new geologic framework information and detailed geologic mapping (1:24,000-scale) of Chickasaw National Recreation Area and vicinity that will help to better characterize the geology and hydrogeology of the Arbuckle Mountains in south-central Oklahoma. Authors and USGS map editors performed separate reviews. Logical_Consistency_Report: Map elements were visually checked for overshoots, undershoots, duplicate features, polygon closure, and other errors by the author and by the GIS technician(s) that created the digital database. Automated routines were also used to check the databases for polygon label errors, line or point attribution errors, sliver polygons, dangling arcs, intersection errors, and projection information. Check plots of the map were reviewed by at least two other geologists for consistency with basic geologic principles and general conformity to USGS mapping standards. Completeness_Report: Data are complete: no features that could be accurately represented at the compilation scale were eliminated or generalized. All geospatial database elements are attributed. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Data from the 1:72,000-scale geologic map of Ham and others (1954) and the 1:100,000-scale geologic map of Johnson (1990) were digitized and used as source information during the field investigations and the compilation of the 1:24,000-scale geologic map of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. The data from the Ham and others (1954) map and the Johnson (1990) map were compared and integrated into one ArcGIS file (geodatabase). Both the Ham and others (1954) and Johnson (1990) geologic maps were registered to the PLSS data on USGS GeoPDF topographic maps which were mosaicked together using GlobalMapper software to insure that these source geologic maps were accurately registered. The resulting digital data for these geologic source maps was checked against scans of the original geologic maps for errors in digitizing and attribution which were fixed by the authors. USGS DEM 10-meter files were mosaicked and converted to shaded relief to enhance the topographic base map. The resulting digital version of the source geologic data, along with digital topographic, shaded relief, aerial photography, and Landsat and Aster imagery were used on a tablet computer during the field investigations to more accurately locate formation contacts and faults. New geologic data from the field investigations was keyed to GPS-based site locations Lineage: Source_Information: Source_Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Blome, Charles D., Lidke, David J., and Wahl, Ronald R.
