  Description:
Abstract: This quadrangle, which lies almost exactly in the center of the Puget Lowland, displays the broad range of geologic environments typical of the region. The upland plain is fluted by the passage of the great continental ice sheet that last covered the area about 17,000 years ago. The plain is cut by channel deposits, both late-glacial and postglacial in age, and it is cleaved even more deeply by one of the major arms of Puget Sound, the Colvos Passage, which here separates the west coast of Vashon Island from the Kitsap Peninsula. Beneath the deposits of the last ice sheet is a complex sequence of older Quaternary-age sediments that extends about 400 meters below the modern ground. The older sediments typically are compact, having been weighted down by one or more episodes of glaciation subsequent to their deposition. Some also are cemented by iron and manganese oxides and hyrdroxides, a consequence of many tens or hundreds of thousands of years of weathering and groundwater movement.
Purpose: This database and accompanying plot files depict the distribution of geologic materials and structures at 1:24,000 scale. The report is intended to provide geologic information for the study of materials properties, earthquake shaking, landslide potential, mineral hazards, seismic velocity, and earthquake faults. In addition, the report contains new information and interpretations about the regional geologic history and framework. However, the scale of this report does not provide sufficient detail for site development purposes.
    Supplemental_Information:
DIGITAL COMPILATION: Interpretation of the lidar DEM began with a geomorphic interpretation following the protocol outlined by Haugerud (2009). We did no additional field work to make this map. Contacts of post-glacial deposits and most glacial deposits are interpreted from the lidar DEM. The digital compilation was done in version 9.3 of ARC/INFO.
BASE MAP: In 2000 and 2001, the Puget Sound Lidar Consortium obtained 1 pulse/m2 lidar data for the area which underlies the 6-ft (2 meter) lidar-derived digital elevation model (DEM) serving as a base for this map. Tabor and Haugerud digitized the drainage net from the lidar DEM
SPATIAL RESOLUTION- Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine- scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.

    Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Use of lidar source materials dictates that locational accuracy is no better than about +/-30 feet. See Haugerud (2009) for discussion of lidar positional accuracy. Because the lidar base does not match exactly the 1953 1:24,000-scale topographic map of the Olalla Quadrangle, positional accuracy of contacts adapted directly from SIM 2902 is even less.

  Overview_Description:
    Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The digital database package contains 6 vector datasets (ESRI ArcInfo coverages) presented in .e00-file format. Each coverage contains formal XML-format metadata with complete entity-and-attribute information, including extensive definitions of feature-attribute values. Also included are a brief readme file and a large (164 MB) image in TIFF format that combines geologic map-unit colors with a shaded-relief image of topography derived from LIDAR.
Users of the database package may wish to download the pamphlet for the contained Description of Map Units.
