  Description:
    Abstract:
      This map was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Resources Program
      to depict the fundamental geologic features for the western part of the
      Fortymile mining district of east-central Alaska, and to delineate the location
      of known bedrock mineral prospects and their relationship to rock types and
      structural features.
  
      This geospatial map database presents a 1:63,360-scale geologic map for the
      Kechumstuk fault zone and surrounding area, which lies 55 km northwest of
      Chicken, Alaska. The Kechumstuk fault zone is a northeast-trending zone of
      faults that transects the crystalline basement rocks of the Yukon-Tanana
      Upland of the western part of the Fortymile mining district. The crystalline
      basement rocks include Paleozoic metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks as
      well as granitoid intrusions of Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous age.
      The geologic units represented by polygons in this dataset are based on new
      geologic mapping and geochronological data, coupled with an interpretation of
      regional and new geophysical data collected by the Alaska Department of
      Natural Resources, Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys. The
      geochronological data are reported in the accompanying geologic map text
      and represent new U-Pb dates on zircons collected from the igneous and
      metaigneous units within the map area.  

    Purpose:
      The purpose of this map developed by the US Geological Survey Mineral
      Resources Program is to depict the fundamental geologic features for the western
      part of the Fortymile Mining District of east-central Alaska and to delineate the
      location of known bedrock mineral prospects and their relationship to rock types
      and structural features such as faults.  The geospatial data in this file include
      polygons of geologic units, geologic contacts (known, inferred, and concealed),
      faults (known, inferred, and concealed) for normal, thrust, strike slip, and those
      with undetermined sense of offset direction.  As well, the traces of anticline and
      synclines, which are interpreted in the metasedimentary rocks southwest of Mount Veta.

  Logical_Consistency_Report:
    All map layers were checked for locational accuracy of features,
    duplicate features, attribute consistency, polygon closure, and line directionality. Each
    line segment has a length and directionality that is appropriate for the geologic feature it
    depicts.  The map was reviewed by USGS staff for consistency with basic geologic principles
    and general conformity to USGS mapping standards.

    Data provided in the database represent the first 1:63,360 geologic
    mapping of the study area. These data are considered complete and the highest resolution
    data presently available.

      The Attribute values in each database layer were assigned by the
      map authors. Attribute fields and values were reviewed and checked for accuracy and
      consistency of terms.

      Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Most of the geologic features in this database are
      considered to be accurately located and within +/- 10 meters of their actual location on
      the 1:63,360-scale topographic base maps.  Accuracy of the geologic features diminishes
      in areas that are poorly exposed and vegetated.  The 1:63,360 topographic maps and
      corresponding Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) used as the primary mapping base for
      this project were assumed to meet the National Map Accuracy Standard of +/- 32 meters.
      Points data obtained from GPS devices have an accuracy of +/- 3 meters

    Process_Step:
      Process_Description: Geologic mapping and data capture was completed during summer
      field investigations conducted 2008-2010. Resulting field maps were scanned,
      georegistered, and digitized using ArcGIS 10. Prospect, observation, and rock
      sample locations, digitally recorded with hand-held GPS devices, were imported
      into ArcGIS to produce the point features in this data set. Rock ages were
      determined by Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe (SHRIMP) analysis at
      USGS laboratories in Stanford, CA. Geospatial layers were attributed appropriately,
      and features were symbolized to produce digital maps.
