DESCRIPTION OF THE DIGITAL DATABASE FOR Geologic Map of Tooting Crater, Amazonis Planitia region of Mars USGS SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS MAP 3297 Reference: Peter J. Mouginis-Mark, 2015, Geologic Map of Tooting Crater, Amazonis Planitia Region of Mars: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3297, scale 1:200,000, available at http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3297/ or http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/sim3297 INTRODUCTION This represents a digital geologic map for Tooting crater on Mars. Tooting crater has a diameter of 27.2 km, and formed on virtually flat lava flows within Amazonis Planitia ~1,300 km west of the summit of Olympus Mons volcano, where there appears to have been no other major topographic features prior to the impact. The crater formed in an area ~185 x 135 km in size that is at an elevation between -3,870 m and -3,874 m relative to the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) Mars datum. This fortuitous situation (i.e., a bland, horizontal target) allows the geometry of the crater and the thickness of the ejecta blanket to be accurately determined by subtracting the appropriate elevation of the surrounding landscape (-3,872 m) from the individual MOLA measurements across the crater. Thus, for the first time, it is possible to determine the radial decrease of ejecta thickness as a function of distance away from the rim crest. On the basis of the four discrete ejecta layers surrounding the crater cavity, Tooting crater is classified as a Multiple-Layered Ejecta (MLE) crater. All GIS data are in Transverse_Mercator projection using the Mars 2000 geographic coordinate system (GCS_Mars_2000_Sphere, 3396190.0 radius). Units are in meters. Scale Factor = 1.0 Center Longitude = -150.0 Standard Parrallel (Center Lat) = 0.0 GEOLOGIC CONTENT (contents of "ESRI_FileGeodatabase" Folder, SIM3297_TootingCrater_200K.gdb) This ArcGIS geodatabase contains one feature dataset (SIM3297_feature_dataset) with the following features: SIM3297_GeoContacts - Line feature class, geologic unit and map boundaries including symbol types: certain, approximate, facies. SIM3297_GeoUnits - Polygon feature class, geologic unit polygon feature class. Contains a "Unit_type" field denoting the unit symbol. SIM3297_LinearFeatures - Line feature class, denoting structural features. SIM3297_facies - Crater ejecta facies SIM3297_LocationFeatures - Secondary craters and secondary buried craters SIM3297_SurfaceFeatures - Secondary crater fields BASE MAP CONTENT The primary data set used for the mapping came from the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) visible (VIS) camera. THEMIS VIS data at 18 m/pixel cover almost all of the mapped area, with only a few data gaps which were filled with THEMIS infrared (IR) data with 100 m/pixel resolution. DIGITAL DATABASE AND METADATA PACKAGE (SIM3297_database.zip) The geologic map files, basemaps, and supportive files are included in the database package, as described below: "SIM_3297_GIS" directory -------------------------------------------- Files Description --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- SIM3297_README.txt This readme file. As such, the names and descriptions for each shapefile are identical to the content of the included geodatabase. See above "GEOLOGIC CONTENT" for details. Users of the database package may wish to download the PDF version of the map for the Description of Map Units. The material described above is available on the World Wide Web at http:/pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3297/ or http:/dx.doi.org/10.3133/sim3297 ZIP FILES The files described above are packaged within a ZIP file. Utilities to uncompress ZIP files are available for most operating systems and may be found readily with a simple web search.
