The geologic map of the central part of the volcanic field has been produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on behalf of the Water Resources Program of the Yakama Nation. The volcanic terrain stretches continuously from Mount Adams eastward as far as Satus Pass and Mill Creek Guard Station. Most of the many hills and buttes are volcanic cones where cinders and spatter piled up around erupting vents while lava flows spread downslope. All of these small volcanoes are now extinct, and, even during their active life times, most of them erupted for no more than a few years. On the Yakama Nation lands, the only large long-lived volcano capable of erupting again in the future is Mount Adams, on the western boundary. The geologic map presented here extends, east-west, from Satus Creek to the Klickitat River and, north-south, from Signal Peak to Indian Rock. In various colors, the map shows the areas covered by about 223 different eruptive units, mostly lava flows and cinder cones, while stars mark vents where many of them erupted. Shown in plain gray, the basement beneath the Simcoe Mountains volcanic field is the Columbia River Basalt Group, regional flood basalts of enormous volume and extent that erupted far to the east and long before the Simcoe volcanics. Purpose: This database was constructed in order to produce a geologic map as a basis for understanding volcanic processes involved in the creation of the Simcoe Mountains Volcanic field. Supplemental_Information: This database contains feature classes describing the geologic lines and polygons, vent locations, geochemistry and geochronology sample locations, and a raster of the topographic base for the Geologic Map of the Simcoe Mountains Volcanic Field, Main Central Segment, Yakama Nation, Washington. This metadata file contains an overview for the entire data release. For more detailed metadata, please see the metadata provided with each individual feature class. This database conforms to the NCGMP09 database schema, Soller, D.R., ed., 2011, Digital Mapping Techniques'09-Workshop Proceedings, Morgantown, West Virginia, May 10-13, 2009: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2010-1335, 260 p. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent to the source map scale are also present in the digital data. The data were edited at a scale of 1:24,000 and higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Acknowledgment of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data. Source_Contribution: previous mapping Process_Step: Process_Description: Geologic linework was compiled on USGS 1:24,000-scale topographic maps by Wes Hildreth and Judy Fierstein. Joel Robinson scanned the geologic linework at 400 dpi, and georeferenced the scans. He converted the linework to vector data using head-up-digitizing. Polygon topology was created and each arc and polygon tagged on-screen by Joel Robinson and Judy Fierstein. Plotfiles were created and quadrangles were then plotted with topography to be checked by the authors. For more descriptive descriptions of the attributes please see the metadata files associated with each feature class. There are three line feature classes, CartographicLines, ContactsAndFaults, and GeologicLines. The CartographicLines feature class contains the locations of cartographic leaders and lavaflow paths. These designations are stored in the Type field. The ContactsAndFaults feature class contains the locations of geologic contacts, faults, dikes, scarps, and water boundaries. The Type field contains the designations for each, and IsConcealed, ExistenceConfidence, IdentityConfidence, and LocationConfidence fields contain whether the object is concealed, how well the author can recognize the line, and how well the author can locate the line. The GeologicLines feature class contains the locations of anticline axes. These feature classes also contain other fields specified by the NCGMP09 database schema. There are three polygon feature classes, MapUnitPolys, OtherPolys, and QuadIndex. MapUnitPolys contains the boundaries for geologic units. Geologic unit identifications for each polygon are stored in the MapUnit field, and IdentityConfidence describes how well the author can identify the polygon. Polygons MapUnit can be joined or related to geologic names and descriptions by the MapUnit field, linking to the MapUnit field in the DescriptionsOfMapUnits table contained in this database. The OtherPolys feature class contains the boundaries of Cinder Cones. These feature classes also contain other fields specified by the NCGMP09 database schema. The QuadIndex feature class contains the boundaries for each of the USGS Topographic Quadrangles, and the NAME field contains each quadrangle name. There are four point feature classes in this release, CartographicPoints, GeochemPoints, GeochronPoints, and VolcanicPoints. The CartographicPoints feature class contains the location of spring and rock quarries. These designations are stored in the Type field. The GeochemPoints feature class contains the locations for geochemical samples. The table contains sample number in the SampleNum field, and major and trace chemistry. The GeochemChronPoints feature class contains the locations for geochronology samples. The table contains sample number in the SampleNum field, and the age of the sample in the Age field. The VolcanicPoints feature class contains the locations of all of the volcanic vents in the map area. These feature classes also contains other fields specificed by the NCGMP09 database schema. The release also contains three tables. The DataSources table identifies the sources of data used in the creation of this map. The DescriptionOfMapUnits table contains the complete geologic unit name, age, and description for each of the geologic units on the map. The Glossary table provides definitions in for many of the terms used in the database. These feature classes also contain other fields specified by the NCGMP09 database schema. Finally, this release contains an annotation feature class, Annotation. This feature class provides cartographic names and labels for the map and all fields are specified by ESRI.
