The surveys were conducted using the SIO R/V Melville outfitted with a 120-kHz Kongsberg EM-122 multibeam echosounder. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center (PCMSC) processed these data and produced a series of bathymetric surfaces and acoustic backscatter images. These data can be used to assess the hazards posed by offshore faults, submarine landslides, and tsunamis as well as map sediment transport pathways and sedimentary sinks. These metadata describe the acoustic backscatter imagery provided in the report. Purpose: These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. The data can be used with geographic information systems (GIS) or other software to identify seafloor features. These data are not intended for navigational purposes. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: In December 2013, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) collected multibeam bathymetry and acoustic backscatter data in the Gulf of Santa Catalina and the San Diego Trough abooard the R/V Melville outfitted with a 120-kHz Kongsberg EM-122 multibeam echsounder (SIO survey ID MV-1316). The U.S. Geological Survey, Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center received from SIO the raw Simrad (.all) survey line files. Backscatter data were processed using the Fledermaus (version 7.3.2) integration of Geocoder. The Simrad (.all) line files were imported into Fledermaus and adjustments were made to the files including TX/RX (transmit/receive) power gain and adaptive angle-varying gain corrections. The lines files were then mosaicked into one overall 20-m resolution image. The image was then exported as a georeferenced TIFF image.
