Abstract:
This part of SIM 3327 presents data for bathymetric contours on the offshore geologic and geomorphic map of the Point San Luis map area, in the vicinity of Pismo Beach, California. The vector data file "Contours_PointSanLuis.zip," which is accessible from <https://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3327/data/sim3327_data_catalog.html>.
The bathymetric contours for the Point Piedras Blancas to Pismo Beach area in central California were generated from bathymetry data collected by California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) between 2007 and 2010, with additional bathymetry from the 1/3 arc second NOAA Tsunami Inundation DEM, and the regional 3 arc second DEM from the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). Before and during 2008, the CSUMB multibeam data was collected using a 244-kHz Reson 8101 multibeam system was used. After 2008, a 100-kHz Reson 7111 was used in deep water, and a 200/400-kHz Reson 7125 was used in shallow water. The mapping missions collected bathymetry from the 0-m isobath to beyond the 3-nautical-mile limit of California's State Waters. To generate contours, a smooth arithmetic mean convolution function that assigns a weight of one-ninth to each cell in a 3-pixel by 3-pixel matrix was applied iteratively to the bathymetry ten times. Following smoothing, contour lines were generated at 10-meter intervals from -10 m to -100 m and at 50-meter intervals from -100 m to -400 m.
Purpose:
These data are intended for science researchers, students, policy makers, and the general public. These data can be used with geographic information systems or other software to aid in assessments and mitigation of geologic hazards in the central California coastal region and to provide sufficient geologic information for land-use and land-management decisions both onshore and offshore.
