Publication_Date: 2015 Title: Geologic map of Baranof Island, southeastern Alaska Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Series_Information: Series_Name: Scientific Investigations Map Issue_Identification: 3335 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Reston, VA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3335/ Online_Linkage: http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/sim3335 Description: Abstract: This dataset represents geologic mapping of Baranof Island, Alaska, at 1:200,000 scale. Purpose: Digital representation of geologic mapping facilitates the presentation and analysis of earth-science data. Digital maps may be displayed at any scale or projection, however the geologic data in this coverage is not intended for use at a scale larger than 1:200,000. Supplemental_Information: Spatial data are in Universal Transverse Mercator, North zone 8, units = meters. Horizontal datum is GCS_North_American_1983. The map data were largely interpreted from 1:63,300 scale but compiled onto 1:250,000 scale US Geological topo maps. The database conforms to the NCGMP09-v1.1 standard (http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/NCGMP09/). The native data structure is an ESRI ArcGIS 10.2 file geodatabase (.gdb) with ancillary files. The geodatabase contains the following elements: - DataSources (non-spatial table) - DescriptionOfMapUnits (non-spatial table) - Glossary (non-spatial table) - CorrelationOfMapUnits (feature dataset): a GIS-format description of the correlation of Map Units diagram that contains the following feature classes: - CMUMapUnitPolys - CMULines These data are cast in a so-called 'unknown' spatial reference. The X and Y values represent inches on the printed page, not map distances. The metadata files for these feature classes do not have Spatial_Reference_Information. - GeologicMap (feature dataset): descriptions of all features plotted on the geologic map, excluding base-map features. Contains feature classes: - CartographicLines - ContactsAndFaults - DataSourcePolys - FossilPoints - GeochronPoints - GeologicLines - MapUnitPolys - OrientationPoints - OtherPolys Metadata records associated with each of these elements contain more detailed descriptions of their purpose, entities, and attributes. Non-spatial tables DataSources, DescriptionOfMapUnits, and Glossary store metadata. All spatial features and some non-spatial features have related entries in table DataSources. DescriptionOfMapUnits defines and describes geologic map units that are delimited in feature class MapUnitPolys. Most technical terms used as feature attributes (including all TYPE terms and all CONFIDENCE terms) are defined in table Glossary. Most features have explicit internal feature-level metadata, including LocationConfidenceMeters, one or more Source attributes, and, as appropriate, ExistenceConfidence, IdentityConfidence, and OrientationConfidenceDegrees. Two shapefile versions of the dataset are also available. The COMPLETE shapefile version consists of shapefiles, DBF files, and delimited text files and retains all information in the native geodatabase, but has limited usability. The SIMPLE shapefile version consists only of shapefiles and is easily used, but lacks some information present in the native geodatabase. The metadata have not been edited to describe these other versions in detail. Data_Set_Credit: This digital dataset was created by Evan Thoms, Keith Labay, and Nora Shew (all USGS). Native_Data_Set_Environment: Dataset was created using ESRI ArcGIS version 10.2. Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: All vector features were originally hand digitized from a folded paper map using a large digitizing tablet, or from a scanned image on screen. The digital data has been visually checked and the geologic map has undergone technical review. Logical_Consistency_Report: A single metadata document was written to describe the following ArcGIS geodatabase elements: - CorrelationOfMapUnits (feature dataset): a GIS-format description of the correlation of Map Units diagram that contains the following feature classes: - CMUMapUnitPolys - CMULines - GeologicMap (feature dataset): descriptions of all features plotted on the geologic map, excluding base-map features. Contains feature classes: - CartographicLines - ContactsAndFaults - DataSourcePolys - FossilPoints - GeochronPoints - GeologicLines - MapUnitPolys - OrientationPoints - OtherPolys - DataSources (non-spatial table) - DescriptionOfMapUnits (non-spatial table) - Glossary (non-spatial table) A separate metadata document for each feature class and standalone table was then generated through automation. These documents describe the particular object in more detail, that is, field descriptions, field domain values, and definitions have been updated for each object. Most other metadata elements are unchanged from the template document. For the most part, this geodatabase and all objects within it conform to the NCGMP09 v1.1 standard, available for review at http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/NCGMP09/. Mapped geologic units are represented as polygons within MapUnitPolys. ContactsAndFaults and MapUnitPolys participate implicitly in a topologic relationshiop; that is, lines are, for the most part, exactly coincident with polygon boundaries, although dangle lines may be present (faults, moraine, etc.) and the relationship is not enforced by an encoded relationship class. Other features of geologic nature which do not define polygon boundaries are represented as points or lines in the other feature classes. Attribute tables and stand alone tables may participate in one-to-one or one-to-many relationships which are not explicitly encoded in the geodatabase. Read the attribute (field) descriptions for each table within the appropriate metadata record or records for more information and review the NCGMP09 v1.1 documentation. The feature classes are available as ESRI shapefiles or compiled within an ESRI ArcGIS ver. 10.2 file geodatabase. For the shapefile versions note that: 1) shapefiles are not contained with feature datasets as described above 2) the geodatabase field OBJECTID is automatically renamed to FID upon export 3) field names are restricted to 10 characters and so some truncation has occurred upon export. 4) fields beginning with "SHAPE_" contain values calculated from the geodatabase instance and spatial reference and are not updated automatically in the shapfile version if features are edited or re-projected. Completeness_Report: The feature classes described in this metadata document were used to create the map portion of USGS SIM 3335. An ArcMap 10.2 map document (file extension .mxd), ArcGIS style files (file extension .style), and the FGDCGeoAge font are also available at the download location for display purposes. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Users of this digital geologic map should respect the intentions of the original mappers and the limitations of the map. This geologic map compilation is intended to be used at a scale of 1:200,000; it is not intended to be used at a more detailed scale. See attribute LocationalConfidenceMeters--given for all observed spatial features--for per-feature estimates of horizontal accuracy derived from estimations based on original line type designation, e.g. "certain", "approximate", and "inferred" and the publication scale. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: All vector features were originally hand digitized on a large digitizing tablet from a folded paper map or from a scanned image on screen. After digitizing, the lines and polygons were attributed. The feature classes are provided in UTM projection and geographic coordinates.
