The files in this data release constitute the digital database, in GIS format, for USGS SIM 3335, Geologic map of Baranof Island, southeastern Alaska, by Sue M. Karl, Peter J. Haeussler, Glen R. Himmelberg, Cathy L. Zumsteg, Paul W. Layer, Richard M. Friedman, Sarah M. Roeske, and Lawrence W. Snee The database is presented in three formats: 1) BaranofIsland_gdb.zip: Contains BaranofIsland.gdb, an ESRI ArcGIS v. 10.2 file geodatabase laid out in accordance with the NCGMP09 v1.1 database schema. A description of this schema is available at http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/NCGMP09/. FGDC-style metadata for the geodatabase itself, each table, and each feature class are distributed as standalone metadata documents within the folder 'metadata'. The zip file also includes report-level metadata, an ESRI .mxd file that describes a map image similar to that in BaranofIsland.pdf and a 'resources' folder that contains an ESRI .style file and related fonts. Note that to obtain proper symbolization of some features using the included .mxd file, it may be necessary to install the fonts in the resources folder. 2) BaranofIsland-complete.zip: A complete, automatic translation of BaranofIsland.gdb into shapefiles, dbf files, and pipe-delimited ("|" symbol) text files for fields longer than 255 characters. Logfile.txt documents how fields were renamed to fit within the 10-character fieldname-length limitation of the shapefile format. Also contains report-level metadata and the 'resources' folder described above. This complete version of the database contains all the content of the native geodatabase transcribed into well-documented, stable file formats. Unfortunately, in this form the information is not particularly easy to use. 3) BaranofIsland_simple.zip. Automatic translation of MOST of the contents of BaranofIsland.gdb into simple flat shapefiles. An easy-to-use, though incomplete, version of the database. The zip file also contains the appropriate metadata and the resources folder described above. These files, as well as a PDF file for a publication-quality image of the map sheet, are available at http://pubs.usgs.gov/sim/3335 or http://dx.doi.org/10.3133/sim3335 The FGDC metadata for each object (table, feature class, dbf, or shapefile) come in four file formats: - A computer-parseable XML file that, though readable in a standard text editor, is not intended for human comprehension ('.xml' extension) - A human-readable plain text version of the XML file with aliases for the FGDC elements and consistent indentation ('_meta.txt' extension) - A human-readable HTML version of the XML file with internal and external hyperlinks for display in a browser ('_meta.html' extension) - A human-readable HTML version where the metadata element names and text are displayed in an FAQ format ('_faq.html' extension) The latter three files were generated automatically from the XML by the mp metadata parser (http://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/tools/doc/mp.html) The base map data used in the published map layout are not included.
