It was compiled from field observations by Evarts, O'Connor, Cannon, and Ian P. Madin between 2004 and 2012 and geomorphic interpretations of lidar imagery by Cannon. Traverses were conducted along most roads, streams, and other areas where geological information could be obtained, and observations were recorded at approximately 40 field stations. Data are located on a base map compiled from hillshade images and contour maps that were derived from lidar surveys acquired in 2005 and 2009 by US Army Corps of Engineers and in 2001 by Clark County, Washington. Water boundaries were taken from 2009 National Agriculture Imagery Program orthoimagery. Cultural data were obtained from US Census Bureau TIGER files and political boundaries are from USGS 2011 Sauvie Island digital topographic quadrangle. Published geologic maps covering the map area were consulted, as were the USGS field notes of Donald E. Trimble. Driller’s reports for water wells were obtained from websites of the Oregon Department of Water Resources and the Washington State Department of Ecology. Approximately 30 rock and sediment samples were collected for supplementary work to characterize map units, primarily the Columbia River Basalt Group. Volcanic rocks are classified on the basis of chemical analyses. Major- and trace-element analyses of most samples were performed by X-ray fluorescence at the Peter Hooper GeoAnalytical Larboratory at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington; some samples were analyzed at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Radiocarbon ages were determined at the USGS radiocarbon laboratory, Reston, Virginia by J. McGeehin or at Beta Analytic, Inc., Miami, Florida. Optically stimulated luminescence and thermoluminescence ages were provided by S.A. Mahan, USGS Luminescence Dating Laboratory, Denver, Colorado. Paleomagnetic properties of flows in the Columbia River Basalt Group were determined by J.T. Hagstrum at the USGS Paleomagnetic Laboratory in Menlo Park, California. Geologic linework was compiled using ArcMap 10.1 GIS software. Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:24,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:24,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data.
