Data notes for "Geologic Map of the Hayfield Quadrangle, Frederick County, Virginia,"  U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3407:

All GIS data are projected to UTM Zone 17 North, with datum North American Datum (NAD) 1983; units are in meters.

A graphic suitable for printing of the full map layout with description of map units, discussion, etc. is available for download. This file is in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). The Adobe Acrobat Reader is available free, online at: https://get.adobe.com/reader/

The compressed .zip files can be extracted with any standard decompression software, such as WinZip for Windows PCs or Stuffit for Mac OS/X. The GIS layers are in the form of an Esri file geodatabase named Hayfield_GeologicMap.gdb. Copies also provided as shapefiles in the sim3407_shapefiles.zip folder. The shapefile names are as they appear in the geodatabase. 

Also included is an ArcMap 10.5 map document contained in the Hayfield_GeologicMap.mxd file. This file is a digital cartographic representation of the geodatabase. It displays the geologic data with appropriate symbology and a lidar-derived topographic basemap image. It does not contain the discussion text, or ancillary graphics found in the full graphic plate. ArcMap 10 or higher is required to view this file.
 
Note that the file geodatabase (Hayfield_GeologicMap.gdb) folder must be located at the same directory level as the Hayfield_GeologicMap.mxd file prior to launching the .mxd file. Likewise, the constituent files in the Basemap folder must be at the same directory level as the .mxd file, or the data source location updated after opening the .mxd.

Metadata files for all of the layers are in the sim3407_metadata.zip file.
