Description:
Abstract:
Study of the Late Cretaceous and younger units of the accretionary complex on Kodiak Island. Dataset includes 6 areas of geologic mapping, a regional map of Kodiak Island showing the Kodiak batholith and major faults, structural data, isograds, and select geochronology and fossil data.
Purpose:
This map is a result of a focused study of the Late Cretaceous and younger geologic units that lie to the southeast of the three strands of the Border Ranges Fault system.
Supplemental_Information:
Copies of the features in Kodiak_geol.gdb are also provided as shapefiles for users that cannot use the geodatabase. Each feature class in the geodatabase has a corresponding shapefile.

The line and polygon attributes were visually checked against an image of the map to be published, or against field sheets.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
The point, line, and polygon feature classes have been checked for topological errors. In this data set, dangles and pseudonodes are permitted.
Completeness_Report:
The geology polygons are attributed with geologic unit labels and unit name. Full unit descriptions are in the pamphlet which accompanies this publication. The point structure feature class holds more measurements than are shown on the printed map. The fossil and geochronology data are from published sources and the reference is provided in the attribute table.

The horizontal accuracy of this data set is fairly poor. The data was captured from images of the various maps provided by the authors which were derived from folded paper USGS 63k topographic field sheets. The individual map areas were georeferenced using a USGS topographic base map. The line and polygon features were digitized from the georeferenced images. The line work from the small scale overview map was adjusted to match the larger scaled inset maps. The point structure locations were digitized from an image of the map, and the latitude and longitude were calculated from the GIS. The locations of the geochronology point features were obtained from a spreadsheet, which did not provide the datum.

Process_Description:
This data set was created from image and text files produced for a USGS publication. There was a single overview map, scale 1:500,000, and 6 inset maps, 1:50,000 scale. The images were georeferenced and the geology content was digitized and stored as feature classes in a geodatabase. Some of the line work shown on the small scale overview map was adjusted to match the line work on the inset maps. The polygon features have attributes to identify and symbolize both the overview map and the inset maps. The geochronology point feature class was created from a spreadsheet. The structure point feature class were captured from an image of the map. Coastlines came from the Alaska Hydrography Database.
