The map area is located near the southern end of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area about 80 km (50 mi) downstream from Hoover Dam. It spans parts of northwest Arizona and southern Nevada near the southern end of Cottonwood Valley. The map includes the Spirit Mountain SE 7.5 minute quadrangle and the southern part of the Spirit Mountain NE 7.5 minute quadrangle. The map area contains well-exposed Neogene and Quaternary strata and associated geomorphic features that record and are critical in dating the arrival of the Colorado River in the early Pliocene, and the subsequent history of the river and its landscape through the Holocene. The valley is bounded on the west by the Newberry Mountains (Nevada), on the east by the Black Mountains (Arizona), and includes part of Lake Mohave, a reservoir created by the completion of Davis Dam in 1951. This map does not include the geology of the reservoir floor and focuses only on surficial deposits. Purpose: This digital map database represents the general distribution of surficial geologic units and related landforms and structures in the Spirit Mountain SE and part of the Spirit Mountain NE 7.5 minute quadrangles, Nevada and Arizona. The database delineates map units that are identified by general age and lithology following the stratigraphic nomenclature of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The present map was created through a collaborative effort between the USGS, the Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS), and the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) to incorporate new mapping and thus provide an updated depiction of the geologic framework, previously published as an NBMG open file map (08-03). This metadata report provides an overview of the data content of this GeMS geodatabase and associated files. The Supplemental Information section of this metadata report contains additional information about the structure and content of the geodatabase and associated files. Detailed attribute, process step, and data quality information is provided in the metadata reports for each feature class and non-spatial table. Refer to the accompanying map and pamphlet for cartographic, descriptive, and interpretive presentations of the information. Supplemental_Information: SIM3448.gdb is a composite geodataset that conforms to "GeMS (Geologic Map Schema)--a standard format for digital publication of geologic maps, version 2.0", available at http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/GeMS/. Metadata records associated with each element within the geodataset contain more detailed descriptions of their purposes, constituent entities, and attributes. Two shapefile versions of the dataset are also available. The OPEN shapefile version consists of shapefiles, DBF files, and delimited text files and retains all[CRS2] information in the native geodatabase, but some programming will likely be necessary to assemble these components into usable formats. The SIMPLE shapefile version consists only of shapefiles and is easily used, but lacks some information present in the native geodatabase. Native_Data_Set_Environment: Version 6.2 (Build 9200) ; Esri ArcGIS 10.3[CRS5].1.4959 Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Attribute integrity was evaluated using scripted and visual workflows. Scripted workflows included custom Python tools, some of which are available at https://github.com/rcrow and the GeMS Toolbox (https://github.com/usgs/gems-tools-arcmap). Subsequently, the data were symbolized based on attributes (following the specifications in the FGDC Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization) and used to create the accompanying cartographic map product, which was visually inspected for errors and inconsistencies. Logical_Consistency_Report: This geodatabase is a composite geodataset that encapsulates the spatial and non-spatial data needed to depict and describe the geology of the map area, and to create the accompanying cartographic map product. The geodatabase conforms to the GeMS standard, except for deviations noted in the Data Quality section of the metadata record associated with each data element. Completeness_Report: The scope of the present map is limited to surficial units of Miocene and younger age because the older deposits have not been mapped in sufficient detail across the area to support a complete map. The geodatabase contains all the schema and attribute elements required by the GeMS standard, unless otherwise noted in the Data Quality section of the metadata record associated with each data element. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: See LocationConfidenceMeters field in each feature attribute table for an estimation of horizontal positional accuracy. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: This geologic map covers a relatively rugged, mostly roadless area and includes the labyrinthine shoreline bluffs of Lake Mohave. Most of the map footprint is within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Stratigraphic exposure in this deeply incised terrain is excellent and stratigraphic relations are particularly complex in some parts of the map area. Collectively, much of the map area has been traversed on foot and mapped in the field by the authors, in part while creating a preliminary map of the area that was published as an NBMG open file map (08-03). Mapping of the alluvial fan sequences relied more on interpretation of high-resolution aerial imagery and other remotely sensed data, such as Worldview 2 satellite data data and MODIS/ASTER (MASTER) airborne simulator data. Complex and intricate interbedded relations along the margins of important Colorado River units have not been mapped in detail owing to practical concerns of time and topography. This map does not include bedrock mapping. Field mapping was integrated with interpretations of remotely sensed imagery in a modified version of the NCGMP09 schema that was implemented as a multi-user versioned ArcGIS Enterprise geodatabase, with PostgeSQL as the relational database. Topology rules, custom Python tools (some of which are available at https://github.com/rcrow), and the GeMS toolbox were used to identify topologic, geometric, and logical errors which were fixed iteratively. The cross sections were built using a cross section tool written by Evan Thoms (USGS) and modified by Ryan Crow (USGS) (available at: https://github.com/rcrow/Cross-Section). Map explanation elements were created directly in ArcMap. A custom Python tool (available at https://github.com/rcrow/MapExtractor_SchemaConverter), which heavily utilizes the GeMS Toolbox (available at https://github.com/usgs/gems-tools-arcmap), merged these elements and converted the Enterprise geodatabase into a file geodatabase that complies with the GeMS schema. Metadata was created and verified using software written by Peter Schweitzer (USGS; https://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/), the GeMS toolbox, and custom Python tools.
