Abstract:

The geology spatial dataset, rev_48k, consists of two parts: (1) geology of the Revett and other formations and (2) outcrops of the upper and lower members of the Revett Formation containing disseminated copper-silver mineralization. The geologic dataset is based on the exploration mapping conducted by ASARCO Inc. (Boleneus and others, 2001a). Polygons in the ArcInfo® coverage rev48k show the extent of the Revett Formation and parts of the underlying Burke Formation and overlying St. Regis and Wallace Formations. The lower, middle, and upper members of the Revett Formations are shown if they were located during field mapping; however, these rocks crop out over less than 10 percent of the study area (pl. 1; fig. 1), a factor that limited field identification of stratigraphic units. Arcs in the coverage rev48k indicate if the boundaries between polygons are contacts, faults, or scratch boundaries.

Purpose:

This dataset was developed to provide geospatial GIS for use in future spatial analysis by a variety of users. This database is not meant to be used or displayed at any scale larger than 1:48,000 (for example, 1:24,000 or 1:12,000).

Larry Appelgate assembled the data on maps from Asarco. Mary H. Carlson (contractor) digitized the geology, edited the linework, and attributed the lines at a scale of 1:48,000 from unpublished Asarco Company paper maps. David E. Boleneus proofed plots of the digital data against the original paper maps.

Attribute accuracy was verified by manual comparison of the source with hard copy printouts and plots.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

Polygon and chain-node topology present.

Segments making up the outer and inner boundaries of a polygon tie end-to-end to completely enclose the area. No duplicate features exist nor duplicate points in a data string. Intersecting lines are separated into individual line segments at the point of intersection. Point data are represented by two sets of coordinate pairs, each with the same coordinate values. All nodes are represented by a single coordinate pair which indicates the beginning or end of a line segment.

Completeness_Report:

This geospatial database was derived from unpublished paper maps by Asarco (1977-1984). Not all features on the paper maps were included in the geospatial database. The Revett Formation is the primary focus of this spatial database but if other map units reside within the Revett Formation they were attributed with their corresponding map unit. Not all faults on original map sheets were included in this spatial database, only faults that co-exist as contacts to the Revett Formation were captured. Not all polygons on the paper maps were captured in the spatial database, if less than 1km in the largest dimension, they many not have been included.

Process_Description:

The geology of the Revett Formation was digitized from paper geologic maps and attributed by Mary H. Carlson (contractor). Additional geologic features were added to the digital database based on the interpretations of David E. Boleneus and Larry Appelgate. The digital linework was proofed by dropping it onto rasterized, georectified TIFF images of the original map sheets (Boleneus and others, 2001a). Mary H. Carlson (contractor) revised the linework so as to better fit the geoTIFF images.
