Book

This revision corrects several mistakes that have been identified through use of the report, and replaces citations to three “gray literature” preliminary reports with citations to their final versions. The principal changes and updates are summarized in the following three paragraphs:

1. Two chronic toxicity values for rainbow trout had mistakenly been copied into the table of acute values in the report (table 15, p. 97, at the10th and 11th rows in version 1.1 of the report). These two invalid entries have been removed from table 15. Because of the cumulative nature of the calculations that used the Table 15 values, this correction resulted in small changes to several derived values elsewhere in the report. For example, the hardness-toxicity regressions for rainbow trout were revised using 35 values instead of 37 which slightly changed the slope of the rainbow trout and pooled regression lines in table 3 and changed the rainbow trout species mean acute value from 2.07 to 2.04 µg/L in table 3, and changed the slope term in the criterion maximum criterion (CMC) equation on p. 29. These corrections are discernable in intermediate calculations that are expressed to four significant figures; however they may not discernable for calculated CMC values which have been expressed to two significant figures. For example, both the version 1.1 CMC equation and the corrected CMC equation produce a value of 0.75 µg/L for a water hardness value of 50 mg/L as calcium carbonate.

2. On p. 23 in table 6, 3 of 41 acute-chronic ratios (ACRs) were incorrectly calculated. At the 10th row down from the top of table 6, a 96-hour acute value for Ceriodaphnia dubia was replaced with a 48-hour acute value to be consistent with table 15. At the 4th and 6th rows up from the bottom of page 23, the wrong chronic values for brown trout were used. The ACRs derived from these values were recalculated, which changed the final ACR estimate for cadmium given in the last row of table 6 on p. 24 from 3.40 to 3.42. The corrected ACR values were not used in subsequent calculations.

3. The results of three studies that were available only as preliminary versions as of December 2006, have subsequently been published in refereed scientific journals. No reported values changed from the preliminary to final published versions, but the citations and bibliography have been updated to these more accessible versions. Citations in the text to “Besser and others, 2006” have been replaced by “Besser and others, 2007”; “Brinkman and Hansen, 2004a” have been replaced by “Brinkman and Hansen, 2007” and “C.A. Mebane, D.P. Hennessy, and F.S. Dillon, unpub. data, 2004” have been replaced by “Mebane and others, 2008”. The references cited in turn have been updated with:

Codenotes 16: Added text: , adjusted for control mortality, which was 15%. While ASTM (1997) recommended that an acute toxicity test should be

considered unacceptable if >10% control mortality occurred, the test was considered acceptable because high mortality during the early swim-up fry

stage was considered typical for this stock (John Thorpe, IDFG Sandpoint Fish Hatchery Manager, Sandpoint, Idaho, oral communication) and the test

the sole data point for an apparently sensitive stock.

New codenote 38 added: 38. Because of non-monotonic concentration responses, the EC50 estimate for this test is more uncertain than others in this

test series and was estimated using the trimmed Spearman-Karber method.

Version 1.1ľDecember 2006

Book—

This revision includes a correction to a chronic toxicity test value for mottled sculpin, Cottus bairdi. Because of the cumulative nature of the criteria calculations, this single correction changed the species mean chronic value for mottled sculpin from 1.22 µg/L to 0.84 µg/L cadmium, which changed the chronic genus sensitivity ranking of Cottus from 3rd to 2nd, which affected the estimate of the 5th percentile of the species sensitivity distribution, which affected the intercept of the hardness-toxicity equation, and which changed the cadmium final chronic value from 0.40 µg/L to 0.39 µg/L.  Revision details follow.

Page 1: The eleventh sentence in paragraph 1: “The four most sensitive genera to chronic exposures were Hyalella (amphipod), Gammarus (amphipod), Cottus, and Salvelinus.” was replaced with: “The four most sensitive genera to chronic exposures were Hyalella (amphipod), Cottus, Gammarus (amphipod), and Salvelinus.”

Page 1: The last sentence in paragraph 1: “Likewise, the criterion continuous concentration (CCC, or “chronic” criterion) was calculated as 0.38 μg/L cadmium using the hardness-dependent equation CCC = (e(0.6247 x ln(hardness)-3.344)) x (1.101672 – ((ln hardness) x 0.041838))).” Was replaced with: “Likewise, the criterion continuous concentration (CCC, or “chronic” criterion) was calculated as 0.37 μg/L cadmium using the hardness-dependent equation CCC = (e(0.6247 x ln(hardness)-3.384)) x (1.101672 – ((ln hardness) x 0.041838))).”

Page 17: The last sentence in paragraph 6: “The second most sensitive genus value also was for an amphipod, Gammarus fasciatus, followed by sculpin, Cottus, and the trout Salvelinus (table 7).” was replaced with: “The second most sensitive genus value was for a sculpin, Cottus, followed by an amphipod, Gammarus fasciatus, and the trout Salvelinus (table 7).”

Page 22: The second sentence in paragraph 4: “Species mean ACRs were estimated for 17 species using 37 pairs of acute and chronic tests (table 6).” was replaced with: “Species mean ACRs were estimated for 17 species using 38 pairs of acute and chronic tests (table 6).”

Rankings 2 and 3 were reversed; values for Cottus (sculpin) and some values for Gammarus (amphipod) were revised. The GMCV “Sum” values were revised. The “Number of GMCVs” values were revised. “FCV” value was revised.

When available data sets are insufficient for reconstructing reliable measurements of density dependence, conservative estimates of extinction probabilities can be made from models that simply omit density dependence (Ginzburg and others, 1990).” were changed to “Under moderate or weak density dependence, the computed extinction risks are lower when density dependence is included in the model. Therefore, when available data sets are insufficient for reconstructing reliable measurements of density dependence, conservative estimates of extinction probabilities can be made from models that simply omit density dependence (Ginzburg and others, 1990).”
