The images were created from band 7-4-2 (RGB, Red-Green-Blue) and band 8 panchromatic Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery. Two Landsat 7 scenes, path 33 row 34 (p33r34) and path 33 row 35 (p33r35), were required to provide coverage of the region of interest, and we used two very good scenes acquired on the same day, the 14th of October 1999. The two scenes were almost perfectly cloud-free, and relatively snow-free, although some minor snow is present on north and east facing slopes above timberline in the Sangre de Cristo Range. Purpose: To provide processed satellite images of the Rio Grande rift in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado for the community of users involved in geologic, hydrologic, and geographic studies of the Espanola and Taos Plateau-San Luis Valley regions. Landsat data have been used by government, commercial, industrial, civilian, and educational communities in the U.S. and worldwide. They area being used to support a wide range of applications in such areas as global change research, agriculture, forestry, geology, resources management, geography, mapping, water quality, and oceanography. Specifically, for this data set, the goal was to make high-quality processed Landsat 7 data, obtained in the fall of 1999, available to consumers and users of this type of data for northern New Mexico. The terrain correction of the data by NED DEM data cause it to have much greater spatial accuracy (15-30 m) than typical Landsat data (250-300 m), and this is essential for geologic mapping purposes and many other uses. The resolution sharpening using band 8 Landsat 7 data provides higher-resolution data, and sharper images than previously available Landsat data. This is the spectral signature of any particular feature. Other signatures are tone (lightness or darkness), texture (surface roughness or smoothness), pattern, shadow, shape, and size which can be as important to feature identification as the spectral signature. By interpretation of Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) satellite imagery, landscape elements such as water features, mineralogy of rocks and soils, and vegetation can be identified and distinguished from each other. Quantitative investigation of the spectral signature of particular features requires special processing from the original satellite image sensor data to conserve absolute and relative reflectance values. This imagery has been processed and enhanced to aid in the identification and characterization of geologic features. In the process of improving the spectral signature of geologic features it has been modified through a variety of resampling steps to aid in geologic interpretation. The RGB values of individual pixels no longer have the same absolute or relative values to adjoining raster cells that characterized the original Landsat 7 ETM+ data. Logical_Consistency_Report: Not applicable for raster data. Completeness_Report: Data is complete Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The Landsat ETM+ sensors used for this imagery (bands 7-4-2 as RGB) have a spatial resolution of 30 meters. The panchromatic band 8 data have a stated resolution of 15 m, although anecdotal empirical data suggest that the effective resolution may be closer to 18 meters. Tests conducted by the authors of this report indicate that the horizontal positional accuracy of NED terrain-corrected Landsat 7 ETM+ data processed by panchromatic sharpening is statistically in the range of 1 pixel (15-30 m).
