Scientific Investigations Report 2012–5017

Geomorphic Setting, Aquatic Habitat, and Water-Quality Conditions of the Molalla River, Oregon, 2009–10

Acknowledgments

This work builds on previous efforts by many other scientists, including Michael Cole (ABR, Inc.), who conducted earlier studies on habitat, water quality, and benthic macroinvertebrates in the Molalla River. We thank Michael for his helpful insights and for providing datasets used in some of the analyses. The authors especially wish to acknowledge the late Robert “Bob” Reynolds, former President of the Molalla River Improvement District (MRID) for his vision, commitment to the river, and for his contribution and support of science. Alan Gallagher and Kathryn Duthies (MRID) and Kay Patteson (Molalla RiverWatch) were instrumental in bringing together various partners and provided data and other information that were used to develop the study. Within the USGS, Krista Jones, Joseph Mangano, and Xavier Rodriquez Lloveras collected pebble-count data throughout the study area, and Adam Stonewall completed the gaging-station analysis; Rose Wallick and James O’Connor provided geomorphic and geologic insights; Tana Haluska digitized and established the geomorphic flood plain; Matt Johnston, Amy Brooks, Karl Lee (retired USGS) and Megan Bela (USGS volunteer) collected water temperature and streamflow data in 2001. Special thanks to John English (Oregon Department of Geology and Minerals) and Sheri Schneider (USGS) for providing LiDAR data, and to the University of Oregon Libraries for providing historic aerial images. Marc Howatt (Public Works Director, City of Canby) and Brian Hutchins (Canby drinking-water plant facility manager) provided insights about water quality of the Molalla River and Pat Curran and Curt McLeod (Curran-McLeod, Inc.) provided some key hydrological insights. We also thank the many private landowners in the basin that provided access to sampling sites and valuable information on the history and condition of the Molalla River.
