(A) No vertical gradients exist for a thick part of the upper aquifer system (consisting of multiple aquifers), although a significant downward gradient exists in the lower aquifer system; (B) an apparent continuum of heads exists in the upper aquifers, and no vertical gradients exist in the lower aquifers.
