Publication_Date: 2015 Title: Physical Subdivision and Description of the Water-Bearing Sediments of the Santa Clara Valley, California Edition: 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital map Series_Name: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report Issue_Identification: SIR 2015-5017 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Menlo Park, CA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Other_Citation_Details: Online_Linkage: http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/sir20155017/ Description: Abstract: This digital map of points contains all the wells, seismic reflection and refraction points, bedrock contact elevation points, and constructed points used in defining and gridding the buried bedrock surface west of the Silver Creek fault beneath the Santa Clara Quaternary basin. Assembly of the wells and other points in this database is described in the text of the report. Locations of the points are approximate. The identity of the bedrock encountered by those wells that reach bedrock is included where known. Sources: The locations and primary data for the wells and other control points were obtained from sources described in the wells-metadata file, records for other wells reaching bedrock, Hazelwood (1974, 1976), seismic reflection profiles of Williams and others (2002, 2005), and elevations from a USGS 10-m elevation grid for points along selected bedrock contacts in the digital map Qbndys. Purpose: The digital map provides the data from which the bedrock surface shown on Map 11 of Plate 1 was prepared. Supplemental_Information: The 1501 points used here to define the bedrock surface consist of 45 wells that reach bedrock, 19 that do not reach bedrock (and therefore force the surface below them), 2 constructed point, 135 points selected from the seismic reflection lines (Evergreen and Guadalupe), 130 refraction points from Hazelwood (1974, 1976), and 1170 topographic elevations along selected bedrock contacts in the digital map Qbndys. The latter are restricted to depositional contacts and exclude contacts along faulted boundaries of the basin. Two constructed points constrain artifacts in the surface. See text for further discussion. Wells depths are included (where know) for those wells that reach bedrock. Procedures_Used: Points representing the various wells and other points were assembled using workstation Arc-Info, version 9.3 (and earlier), a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California), with version 3.5 of the menu interface ALACARTE (Fitzgibbon and Wentworth, 1991; Fitzgibbon, 1991; Wentworth and Fitzgibbon, 1991). The original file is in COVERAGE (Arc-Info vector data) format and is here stored in uncompressed ARC export format. The projection used is UTM, zone 10, NAD27, Clarke 1866 spheroid, in meters. Reviews_Applied_to_Data: The report of which this file is a part was scientifically reviewed, as were the published sources. Related_Spatial_and_Tabular_Data_Sets: Many other digital maps and raster grids accompany this report (see Appendix E). The locations of the wells and other points come from sources that do not specify location accuracies, making the locations herein only approximate. Plotting at scales larger than about 1:250,000 will not yield greater real detail, nor will extraction of XY locations from the map yield highly accurate locations. The actual uncertainty is unknown, although for most wells it is probably less than 100-200 m. Where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: This digital map was compiled in Arc-Info, a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California). Some of the attributes in the attribute table of the coverage are set or calculated by Arc-Info, but most are added by the author. QBDYS-ID is required by internal policy to be sequential. This ensures the highest compatibility of our databases with other GISs. Therefore QBDYS-ID is calculated equal to QBDYS#, which is a unique, sequential integer assigned by Arc-Info to each data record. The items added by the author are CODE, GNDEL, DEPTH, USE, TYPE, and a sequence of depth (DEPTH-NN) and elevation (ELEV-NN) items representing the several sedimentary boundaries picked in the wells. NN in those item names represents one of the tokens in the character string c2a c2b c2 c3b c3 c4b c4 c5b c5 c6b c6 c7b c7 c8b c8. Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation: This metadata report.
