Publication_Date: 2015 Title: Physical Subdivision and Description of the Water-Bearing Sediments of the Santa Clara Valley, California Edition: 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital map Series_Name: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report Issue_Identification: SIR 2015-5017 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Menlo Park, CA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Other_Citation_Details: Online_Linkage: http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/sir20155017/ Description: Abstract: This digital map provides a framework for the Quaternary Santa Clara sedimentary basin and for the digital maps of wells and raster grids of sedimentary surfaces that also accompany this map. It is not a complete geologic map, but instead contains the outer boundary of the Quaternary deposits of the basin, which are subdivided into four simple units, Bay mud, Holocene alluvium, Pleistocene alluvium, and a few small areas of older Pleistocene alluvium. Quaternary deposits outside the basin proper are not included. The map also contains traces of faults that bound the basin on the east and west, as well as the Silver Creek fault, which crosses northwestward across the eastern part of the basin. Distinction between exposed and concealed parts of the faults is not made. Sources: The digital map was compiled and simplified from Quaternary geologic maps by Knudsen and others (2000) and Witter and others (2006), with faults from bedrock geologic maps by Brabb and others (2000), Graymer and others (1996), and Wentworth and others (1998). The Silver Creek fault is from Wentworth and others (2010), and the Monte Vista fault is modified from a trace based on interpretation of magnetic anomalies by V.E. Langenheim (digital commun., 2007). Purpose: The digital map places the wells and raster surfaces accompanying this report in the context of the whole Santa Clara Quaternary sedimentary basin. The basin boundaries on this map, together with the topographic surface of raster grid el-c0 and the bedrock surface of raster grid el-rk, define the three dimensional boundaries of the basin fill. The scales of the source maps range from 1:24,000 to 1:100,00, and various lines have been smoothed and otherwise fitted to each other, such that the linework should not be considered adequate for detailed site studies. Supplemental_Information: Most of the lines in the map are taken from the two Quaternary map sources (Knudsen and others, 2000, and Witter and others, 2006), as these are the best current sources for Quaternary contacts. It should be noted, however, that because of different mapping techniques, the boundaries common to both the Quaternary and bedrock geologic maps (namely what are deemed bedrock contacts in the Quaternary maps) are generally not coincident, and many differ by as much as 100 meters or more. Those lines in the Quaternary maps tend to be farther toward the surficial units than in the bedrock maps. Procedures_Used: The digital linework in this map was compiled in workstation Arc-Info, version 9.3 (and earlier),a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California), with version 3.5 of the menu interface ALACARTE (Fitzgibbon and Wentworth, 1991; Fitzgibbon, 1991; Wentworth and Fitzgibbon, 1991). The files are in either GRID (Arc-Info raster data) format or COVERAGE (Arc-Info vector data) format. Coverages are stored in uncompressed ARC export format. The GIS data model is that of ALACARTE, which is similar to the single geologic map model of Gautier (1999). The projection used is UTM, zone 10, NAD27, Clarke 1866 spheroid, in meters. Reviews_Applied_to_Data: The published sources from which this map was compiled were all scientifically reviewed before their publication, as were the text and figures for the report that this map accompanies. The Monte Vista fault trace is largely a modification of fault traces present in those published sources. Related_Spatial_and_Tabular_Data_Sets: Many other digital maps and raster grids accompany this report (see Appendix E). The scales of the source maps range from 1:24,000 to 1:100,00, and various lines have been smoothed and otherwise fitted to each other, such that the linework should not be considered adequate for detailed site studies. Plotting at scales larger than about 1:100,000 will not yield greater real detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: This digital map was compiled in Arc-Info, a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California). Most of the attributes in the attribute tables of the coverage are set or calculated by Arc-Info. The exceptions are QBDYS-ID, LTYPE, and PTYPE. QBDYS-ID is required by internal policy to be sequential. This ensures the highest compatibility of our databases with other GISs. Therefore QBDYS-ID is calculated equal to QBDYS#, which is a unique, sequential integer assigned by Arc-Info to each data record. LTYPE and PTYPE are author added items to the coverage AAT or PAT that are used to describe the type of line (LTYPE) and area (PTYPE) being recorded. Each has WIDTH 35, OUTPUT 35, TYPE C.
