Publication_Date: 2015 Title: Physical Subdivision and Description of the Water-Bearing Sediments of the Santa Clara Valley, California Edition: 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital map Series_Name: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report Issue_Identification: SIR 2015-5017 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Menlo Park, CA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Other_Citation_Details: Online_Linkage: http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/sir20155017/ Description: Abstract: This digital map contains points representing 126 wells used to define eight sedimentary cycles that form the upper 1,000 feet or so of the Quaternary sedimentary section in the Santa Clara basin. Assembly of the wells in this database is described in the text of the report. Locations of the points are approximate. Each of the cycles has been subdivided into a fine top and a coarse bottom, and the points here carry information about the thickness and texture of those top and bottom subdivisions. Sources: The locations and primary data for the wells were obtained from sources described in the wells-metadata file. The identification of the sedimentary cycles and their subdivision and characterization by thickness and texture (coarse or fine) is by the author. Purpose: This digital map supplements the map wells by providing subdivision information about the cycles. Supplemental_Information: Each of the eight cycles is subdivided where possible into a fine top (T) and a coarse bottom (B) and each of those intervals is characterized by total thickness (TK), aggregate thickness of coarse layers (CRS), thickness of the thickest fine layer (FIN), and number of discrete layers (N). All but the total thickness are dependent on the detail of the well logs, with geophysical logs (TYPE = geophysical) being much more detailed that most drillerŐs logs (TYPE = driller), and some drillerŐs logs being much more detailed than others. This effect is most pronounced on the number of layers N. Null values (-9999) are assigned where subdivision was not possible. Procedures_Used: Points representing the various wells and and their subdivision values were assembled using workstation Arc-Info, version 9.3 (and earlier), a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California), with version 3.5 of the menu interface ALACARTE (Fitzgibbon and Wentworth, 1991; Fitzgibbon, 1991; Wentworth and Fitzgibbon, 1991). The original file is in COVERAGE (Arc-Info vector data) format and is here stored in uncompressed ARC export format. The projection used is UTM, zone 10, NAD27, Clarke 1866 spheroid, in meters. Reviews_Applied_to_Data: The report of which this file is a part was scientifically reviewed, as were the published sources. The locations of the wells and other points come from sources that do not specify location accuracies, making the locations herein only approximate. Plotting at scales larger than about 1:250,000 will not yield greater real detail, nor will extraction of XY locations from the map yield highly accurate locations. The actual uncertainty is unknown, although for most wells it is probably less than 100-200 m. Where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: This digital map was compiled in Arc-Info, a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California). Some of the attributes in the attribute table of the coverage are set or calculated by Arc-Info, but most are added by the author. SUBS-ID is required by internal policy to be sequential. This ensures the highest compatibility of our databases with other GISs. Therefore SUBS-ID is calculated equal to SUBS#, which is a unique, sequential integer assigned by Arc-Info to each data record. The items added by the author are CODE, TYPE, DEPTH, and a sequence of items representing interval thickness (C#-TB-TK), aggregate coarse thickness (C#-TB-CRS), maximum fine thickness (C#-TB-FIN) and number of layers (C#-TB-N) characterizing the sedimentary cycles picked in the wells. In those database items, # represents one of the several cycles (1, 2a, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8), and TB represents either the fine top (T) or coarse bottom (B).
