Publication_Date: 2015 Title: Physical Subdivision and Description of the Water-Bearing Sediments of the Santa Clara Valley, California Edition: 1.0 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital map Series_Name: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report Issue_Identification: SIR 2015-5017 Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Menlo Park, CA Publisher: U.S. Geological Survey Other_Citation_Details: Online_Linkage: http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/sir20155017/ Description: Abstract: This digital map of points contains all the wells and topographic elevations used in defining and gridding the boundary of sedimentary cycle 1 (C1) and its internal top/bottom surface (C1b). Control for the boundaries of cycles 2-8 (C2-C8) and their internal top/bottom surface (C2b-C8b) are separately presented in the digital map wells. Assembly of the wells and other points in this database is described in the text of the report. Locations of the points are approximate. The wells represent a small, scattered sample of the many thousands of wells in the Santa Clara Valley. Topographic elevations were selected to represent the surface of the top of cycle 2 deposits near the heads of many of the alluvial fans, with their values obtained from a USGS 10-m elevation grid. Sources: The locations and primary data for the wells were obtained from various sources (below), ground elevations are from a USGS 10-m elevation grid derived from 1:24,000 topographic contours, and depths and elevations of the sedimentary boundaries were determined by the authors from the well records. Eight of the wells with geophysical logs (Newhouse and others, 2004; table 1) were drilled in 2000-2003 by the U.S. Geological Survey for the Santa Clara Valley Water District. Geophysical logs were also obtained for fourteen other wells in the valley, including (1) wells from the cities of Palo Alto (well codes ELCM and ROTH), Mountain View (MTNV), and Saratoga (HTOR), (2) two wells drilled for emplacement of vertical extensometers in the valley for J.F. Poland in 1960 (SUNY and SJXT; Poland and Ireland, 1988), and (3) a deep well drilled at Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, in 1973 (MOFT; Beyer, 1980). The Dumbarton well (DUMB) was drilled by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1975-76 and described by Bennett (1979). Logs of three deep geotechnical wells drilled along the Dumbarton bridge alignment in 1992-93 (B-4, B-6, and B-11) were provided by the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans). Three control points from the dataset of the California Geological Survey (Clahan and others, 2002) were included to constraint the cycle 1 surface in areas of otherwise limited control. Purpose: The map provides the data and interpretation of elevations of cycle 1 and internal top/bottom boundaries used in interpreting the sedimentary stratigraphy of the Santa Clara basin and in preparing raster grids of those sedimentary boundaries. Supplemental_Information: The 87 wells in this digital map used for cycle 1 include 63 wells represented by driller?s logs, 21 wells represented by continuous wire-line geophysical logs, and 3 represented by geotechnical logs. Depths of the wells range from 110 to 1,427 feet, with about half greater than 700 feet. The wells are identified by codes that for some (such as GUAD) are based on well names or other features, for most (such as 731) by arbitrary numbers, and for three by CGS. The 223 topographic elevation points have code values of topo. For these points, values for DEPTH-1, DEPTH-1B, and ELEV-1B are all null (-9999). Where ELEV-1B = ELEV1, no lower C1 coarse interval recognized, and where Depth-1B = -9999, no upper C1 fine interval recognized. Procedures_Used: Points representing the various wells and other points were assembled using workstation Arc-Info, version 9.3 (and earlier), a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California), with version 3.5 of the menu interface ALACARTE (Fitzgibbon and Wentworth, 1991; Fitzgibbon, 1991; Wentworth and Fitzgibbon, 1991). The original file is in COVERAGE (Arc-Info vector data) format and is here stored in uncompressed ARC export format. The projection used is UTM, zone 10, NAD27, Clarke 1866 spheroid, in meters. Reviews_Applied_to_Data: The report of which this file is a part was scientifically reviewed, including elevation contours derived from raster grids of the surfaces defined herein. Related_Spatial_and_Tabular_Data_Sets: Many other digital maps and raster grids accompany this report (see Appendix E). The locations of the wells and other points come from sources that do not specify location accuracies, making the locations herein only approximate. Plotting at scales larger than about 1:250,000 will not yield greater real detail, nor will extraction of XY locations from the map yield highly accurate locations. The actual uncertainty is unknown, although for most wells it is probably less than 100-200 m. Where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Overview_Description: Entity_and_Attribute_Overview: This digital map was compiled in Arc-Info, a commercial Geographic Information System (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California). Some of the attributes in the attribute table of the coverage are set or calculated by Arc-Info, but most are added by the author. The WELLS1-ID values are required by internal USGS policy to be sequential. This ensures the highest compatibility of our databases with other GISs. Therefore Wells1-ID is calculated equal to WELLS1#, which is a unique, sequential integer assigned by Arc-Info to each data record. The items added by the author to the points database are CODE, GNDEL, DEPTH, USE, TYPE, and a pair of depth (DEPTH-NN) and elevation (ELEV-NN) items representing the cycle 1 sedimentary boundaries picked in the wells. NN in those item names represents c1b or c1. Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation: This metadata report.
