Social-Value Maps for Arapaho, Roosevelt, Medicine Bow, Routt, and White River National Forests, Colorado and Wyoming By Zachary H. Ancona, Benson C. Sherrouse, and Darius J. Semmens 2016 U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2016-5019 ABSTRACT: Social-value rasters covering five national forests (Arapaho, Roosevelt, White River, Medicine, and Routt) in Colorado and Southern Wyoming. Data was created using SolVES in ArcGIS for use in a Scientific Investigations Report spatially representing social values derived from responses to a value and preference survey distributed to random households adjacent to the national forests. PURPOSE: The Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey has been investigating how public perception of cultural ecosystem services can help support National Forest management decisions. Presenting this data in a digital form allows for forest managers to use GIS in their decision making alongside data that may not be available for analysis outside of forest management. This data should be used to identify areas where the public places high value on certain social values. The information displayed in the rasters provided are a result of point locations provided by survey respondents transposed into a shapefile. These points are ran through the Social Values for Ecosystem Services (SolVES) tool to produce a value surface based on point locations compared to a number of explanatory environmental variables that cover the forests. Users of this data should be aware that the social values displayed came from household mailed surveys in counties adjacent to each national forest.
