Version History for U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2021-5048 Strandlines from Large Floods on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona By Thomas A. Sabol, Ronald E. Griffiths, David J. Topping, Erich R. Mueller, Robert B. Tusso, and Joseph E. Hazel, Jr. ----------------------------------------------------- First posted online August 18, 2021 ----------------------------------------------------- Revised and reposted September 14, 2021 On pages 1 and 2 of the text, in the section "Purpose and Scope," reference citations to Hereford (1984, 1996), Hereford and others (1993, 1996, 1998, 2000), and Webb and others (2002) were missing from the sentence that began "Although peak-stage indicators * * *." The missing reference citations have been added, and the verb phrase "have previously been reported by * * *" has been revised to "have been reported and analyzed by * * *." Additionally, the sentence has been split into two sentences by replacing the comma in "Magirl and others (2008), this current report" with a period (and capitalizing the ensuing "this"), deleting "Although" from the beginning of the (first) sentence, and inserting "of the Colorado River in GCNP" after "short reaches" for clarity. On page 4 of the text, in the bulleted description of "Trash" as a peak-stage indicator in the "Field Survey" section, the last sentence did not mention "nails in milled lumber" as a type of trash drift. Furthermore, references to past work involving trash dating methods were not included. An additional sentence detailing the background of trash dating methods, with citations to the literature, has been added to the end of the description, and "nails in milled lumber" has been added to the list of trash drift types. On page 8 of the text, references to Hereford and others (1993) and Hereford (1996)---and their use of the photograph in figure 5---were missing from the figure 5 caption. The figure caption has been revised to include reference to the previous use of the photograph by Hereford and others (1993) and Hereford (1996). On page 22 of the text, in the References Cited, the "Baker, V.R., 1987" reference was incorrectly titled "Paleoflood hydrology and extreme flood events." The reference has been revised to include the correct title ("Paleoflood hydrology and extraordinary flood events"). On page 22 of the text, in the References Cited, the "Baker, V.R., 2000" reference contained an instance of incorrect title case. The incorrect case usage in "Paleoflood Hydrology" has been corrected to "Paleoflood hydrology." On pages 22, 23, and 24 of the text, 13 references were missing from the References Cited. These 13 references ("Hereford, R., 1984," "Hereford, R., 1993," "Hereford, R., 1996," "Hereford, R., Burke, K.J., and Thompson, K.S., 1998," "Hereford, R., Burke, K.J., and Thompson, K.S., 2000," "Hereford, R., Fairley, H.C., Thompson, K.S., and Balsom, J.R., 1993," "Hereford, R., Thompson, K.S., Burke, K.J., and Fairley, H.C., 1996," "House, P.K., and Baker, V.R., 2001," "House, P.K., Pearthree, P.A., and Klawon, J.E., 2002," "Hunt, C.B., 1959," "Hunt, C.B., 1975," "Hunt, C.B., and Mabey, D.R., 1966," and "Webb, R.H., Melis, T.S., and Valdez, R.A., 2002") have been added to the References Cited. On page 23 of the text, in the References Cited, the "Rantz, S.E., 1982" reference authorship was incorrect. The referenced report does not give sole authorship to Rantz; instead, authorship is credited to "S. E. Rantz and others," but the "others" are not explicitly named. Although "and others" is not typically acceptable for reference authorship in the References Cited sections of USGS products, the authorship of the "Rantz, S.E., 1982" reference has been updated to include "and others" because its inclusion is more accurate than its exclusion. In-text citations have likewise been updated as necessary.
