This manual is a revision of "Measurement of Time of Travel and Dispersion in Streams by Dye Tracing," by E.F . Hubbard, F.A. Kilpatrick, L.A. Martens, and J .F . Wilson, Jr ., Book 3, Chapter A9, published in 1982.

Preface

The series of manuals on techniques describes procedures for planning and executing specialized work in water-resources investigations . The material is grouped under major subject headings called books and is further subdivided into sections and chapters . Section A of Book 3 is on surface water.

The unit of publication, the chapter, is limited to a narrow field of subject matter. This format permits flexibility in revision and publication as the need arises. Chapter A9 deals with the application of dye tracers for the measurement of time of travel in streams.

Provisional drafts of chapters are distributed to field offices of the U .S. Geological Survey for their use . These drafts are subject to revision because of experience in use or because of advancement in knowledge, techniques, or equipment. After the technique described in a chapter is sufficiently developed, the chapter is published and is for sale by the U.S. Geological Survey, Books and Open-File Reports Section, Box 25425, Building 810, Federal Center, Denver, Colorado 80225.
