LOCATION.-- Lat 37°41'52", long 88°16'00" (NAD of 1927), in SE1/4NE1/4 sec.36, T.9 S., R.8 E., Gallatin County, Hydrologic Unit 05140204, on right bank at old Island Ripple Bridge site, 2.5 mi southwest of Junction, 4 mi downstream from North Fork, and 13.8 mi upstream from mouth.

 

DRAINAGE AREA.-- 1,040 mi2, approximately.

SURFACE-WATER DISCHARGE AND STAGE

 

DISCHARGE: October 1939 to October 1971, October 1976 to February 1977, April 1977.

 

REVISED RECORDS.-- WSP 953: 1940.

 

GAGE.-- Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 320.40 ft above NGVD of 1929. Prior to Dec. 13, 1939, nonrecording gage at upstream side of Island Ripple Bridge at same datum. Since Dec. 27, 1939, auxiliary water-stage recorder 3.5 mi downstream at Eagle Ripple Ford.

 

REMARKS.-- Backwater from Ohio River frequently causes reversal of flow at station and occasionally, at extremely high stages, causes diversion from Wabash River to Saline River just above station.

 

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD.--

SURFACE-WATER DISCHARGE AND STAGE: Maximum discharge, 37,400 ft3/s Mar. 19, 1945; maximum gage height, 44.03 ft Mar. 17, 1945 (backwater from Ohio River); maximum daily reverse flow, 6,260 ft3/s Apr. 21, 1948; minimum discharge during nonbackwater periods, 0.9 ft3/s Sept. 22, 23, 1944; minimum gage height, 1.01 ft Sept. 25-28, 1941.

 

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--

SURFACE-WATER DISCHARGE AND STAGE: Flood of 1937 reached a stage of about 55.8 ft (backwater from Ohio River).
