4-4. Southwest of Hawaii (PC-13)
Objectives
PC13 was recovered 135 km W of the southern
tip of Hawaii island. Its location is just
east of a large elongate N-S trending seamount,
believed to be of Cretaceous age. This region
has experienced a series of several landslide
events.
Lithology
The lithology of PC13 is characterized by
moderate yellowish brown clay interbedded
with volcanic sand -silt layers in the upper
section. The base of the section is comprised
of a 3.2 m-thick black sand layer. It should
be noted, however, that upon recovery of
this core, a 200 cm gap was found from sec3
to sec5, and some in-flow may be present
in the middle part of this core.
