This part of DS 935 presents video observations from cruises T108PS, and K109WO, in the Southern Salish Sea. The vector data file is included in "VideoObs_AdmiraltyInlet.zip," which is accessible from <https://pubs.usgs.gov/ds/935/video_observations/data_catalog_video_observations.html>.
To validate the interpretations of sonar data in order to turn it into geologically and biologically useful information, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) towed a camera sled over specific locations throughout the Admiralty Inlet map area to collect video and photographic data that would “ground truth” the seafloor. The ground-truth survey conducted in the Admiralty Inlet map area occurred in 2008 (USGS, 2008) on the R/V Tombolo in cooperation with the Tombolo Mapping Lab. The camera sled was towed 1 to 2 m over the seafloor at speeds of between 1 and 2 nautical miles/hour. The survey for this map area includes approximately 6 hours (9.1 trackline km) of video.

Waterproof camera is submerged and connected to GPS receiver at the surface with Red Hen Systems VMS 300 hardware. Georeferenced video and still photos are collected. Visual observations are of variable unknown accuracy.

The camera-sled tracklines were sited through video fed up to the research vessel in real time, where USGS and Tombolo scientists recorded both the geologic and biologic character of the seafloor. While the camera was deployed, observations were recorded for a 10-second period once every minute. Onshore, the observation comma-delimited text file was converted to an ArcGIS shapefile.
