Description:

Abstract:
This cover contains the outlines of landslides that occurred on the coastal bluffs between Seattle and Everett, Wash., during the winters of 1996 and 1997.

Purpose:
This cover shows the distribution of the recent landslides along the bluffs next to Puget Sound between Shilshole Bay and Everett, Wash. The data were compiled at 1:24,000 scale primarily from 1:12,000-scale aerial photographs and are not intended to be used at any finer scale than 1:24,000. The data should not be used as a substitute for detailed investigation to determine site-specific slope stability or the existence of landslides at specific sites.

Supplemental_Information:
The coverage combines data from the U.S. Geological Survey and Shannon and Wilson, Inc. Data provided by Shannon and Wilson, Inc. are used with permission of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The linework was captured by hand digitizing each 7.5' quadrangle. Each quadrangle was rigorously proofed. The coverage was edited and assembled using ARC/INFO software.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Polygon and chain-node topology present. All polygons contain label points and are closed. Several arcs (scarps) exist and are attributed as such.
Completeness_Report: The data are complete.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Each 7.5' quadrangle was registered on an Altek digitizer with errors not greater than 1/200 inch.

Process_Description:
The landslide polygon outlines were drawn on 7.5' paper map quadrangles. The outlines were interpreted primarily from aerial photographs. The linework was captured by hand digitizing each 7.5' quadrangle. Each quadrangle was rigorously proofed against the original maps. The coverage was edited and assembled using ARC/INFO software. Harp also checked the data against 1:6000-scale photographs that had been acquired by Shannon and Wilson, Inc. in February 1997 and made several additions and revisions to the original maps. Baum made additional revisons by comparing the air photo interpretation against detailed field mapping (by Shannon and Wilson, Inc) for three areas along the bluffs.
