Dairy farms are the principal source of agricultural runoff on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Fecal material (look underneath the cows) from milking operations flows into north shore rivers, which in turn flow into Lake Pontchartrain. One such river is the Tangipahoa, which was closed to swimmers in 1987 because of high levels of fecal coliform bacteria.
