LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN BASIN FOUNDATION EDUCATION INITIATIVES


The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation has an active education department, which reaches an average of 5,000 students of all ages each year. Through an acclaimed teacher training program, many more thousands of students are reached.

Examples of activities include "Earth Camp," a summer camp for inner-city children, many of whom have never been outside of the city of New Orleans, and clean-up activities, such as Beach Sweep. Beach Sweep attracts of 1000 volunteers of all ages each Fall.

Four times a year, teachers from throughout the Lake Pontchartrain Basin are invited to attend weekend training workshops at the Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station, located on Pass Manchac, between Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.

The lush freshwater marsh behind the station and boardwalks offer excellent teacher training opportunities.
